My grandmother Emily ASHFORTH (née Emily BELLAMY 1903-1992) is wearing one of her fur coats, from her collection of fur coats, perhaps with just a whiff of mothball. Shortly after Ernest died I recall driving to Emily's flat in Langsett Close, Hillsborough, Sheffield in order to take her for a day out in Derbyshire....

[PiwigoPress id=775 lnktype='albumpicture' opntype='_self' size='me' url='https://familyhistoryjournal.com/gallery'] Ernest Ashforth 1905-1990 My maternal grandfather Ernest ASHFORTH 1905-1990. Like many men in Sheffield he spent a good deal of his working life at various steel works in the city. While working at one of the steel companies he suffered a severe back injury. He eventually finished his working days as a stores-man at Elsworths, a saw manufacturing company based at Herries Road, close to the Sheffield Wednesday football ground. So it was quite fortunate he happened to be an avid supporter of Sheffield Wednesday....

...record of death for a William Henry ASHFORTH but I have no documentary evidence to support this. Likewise records from another search online suggest that Ellen ASHFORTH's maiden name may have been Ellen PASLEY, though again I cannot substantiate this. Interestingly the England and Wales Census 1901 records my great grandfather William Henry ASHFORTH 28 years of age and his son William Henry ASHFORTH 1896-1916 (my great uncle) 4 years of age are listed as 'visitors'. My grandfather Ernest ASHFORTH 1905-1990 was born February 1905. Update: 2008-01-05 Ellen PASLEY proved to be incorrect. Please click here to read this update....

...luxury of a bathroom, admittedly very small but enormous when compared to a tin bath. The bedrooms were so cold in winter that I would sleep with a hot brick wrapped in a blanket to my feet. The brick was placed in the coal fire just before I went to bed. At least unlike an hot water bottle it couldn't burst, though third degree burns were always a distinct possibility. ...Matilda with a very young child, and perhaps Florence is helping out. At some point I will try and spend a little time researching this curious situation. Updates: 2016-11-03 In this post "Register of Inmates, Ecclesall Bierlow Workhouse" I discovered Florence ASHFORTH (née Florence FLOWERS 1876-1973) together with her youngest son Ernest Ashforth 1905-1990 registered as inmates at the Ecclesall Bierlow Workhouse. I can only surmise that during the period circa 1900-1905 something had happened to her husband William Henry ASHFORTH 1873-1926. Unfortunately I will probably never know. He died in 1926 at the relatively early age of 52 years....

William Horace Bellamy 1909-Deceased

William Horace Bellamy 1909-Deceased Another photograph from our family collection that I recently uploaded to the Ashforth family photographs section of the Gallery. William Horace BELLAMY 1909-Deceased (usually known as Horace) was a younger brother of my grandmother Emily ASHFORTH (née Emily BELLAMY 1903-1992), and that is about all I know. He is almost certainly deceased since I recollect having to break the news of his death (with the reservation it may have been her brother Albert that had passed away) to my grandmother shortly after her husband and my grandfather Ernest ASHFORTH 1905-1990 had passed away in 1990. His...
