George Ellis 1860-1928

During research of my family names ROSEWARNE and ELLIS, I came across, in some burial records, the name of my gg grandmother Emily ELLIS (née Emily ROSEWARNE 1865-1944). I had already established her date of birth, marriage and death but it was rewarding to find where she had been laid to rest. The burial record also provided her last known address, that of 36 Finlay Street, Sheffield. The address rang a bell, since I had already seen this address while researching ELLIS baptisms.

Though I had details of Emily's important dates I had never been able to establish when her husband (my gg grandfather) George ELLIS had passed away. I had his date of birth but the date of his passing had always eluded me. Though Ellis is a very common surname, as is the forename George, having the address made it a relatively easy task to now find the correct George ELLIS's burial record: George was buried on March 5, 1928 and Emily on February 25, 1944.

In the latter years of their lives, fortunately, George and Emily had remained in the same house at 36 Finlay Street, a large house I remember as a child visiting: complete with stables, a horse and a carriage, and according to my mother, two staircases.

Eventually the house would be demolished to make way for a road widening scheme; some call it progress.

The burial records show Emily and George were buried at Crookes Cemetery, Sheffield. So come some fine spring weather I will take a trip to Crookes and armed with the grave number and a plan of the cemetery, hope to locate and photograph the headstone. Assuming there is one and it hasn't been laid horizontal due to health and safety concerns.

John William Chinn and Elizabeth Chinn (née Elizabeth Roberts)

During the early part of 2016 I received an email from a descendant of Martha Patricia SAMBROOK (née Martha Patricia ELLIS 1894-Deceased). The lady (whom for privacy I will refer to as MM) is the gg grandaughter of Martha Patricia SAMBROOK (née Martha Patricia ELLIS 1894-Deceased) and Arthur SAMBROOK -Deceased.

Martha Patricia ELLIS was my great grand aunt, a younger sister of my great grandmother Emily ELLIS 1883-1978, their parents being George ELLIS 1860-Deceased and Emily ROSEWARNE 1865-1944.

MM informed me of her grandmother's married name of CHINN. Since CHINN is a relatively easy name to search for, I decided to spend a couple of hours researching the name CHINN in and around Sheffield: this returned quite a few ancestors of MM's grandfather.

Searching publicly accessible databases I found a marriage for a John William CHINN 1902-1981 and one Elizabeth ROBERTS who died at Sheffield in 1973. I was able to find 9 children from this marriage though, sadly, several died at quite an early age.

Though as yet I cannot corroborate my findings, I am grateful for the snippets of information people send me.

Most of the people I found are probably still living so I have withheld names and relationships except for known deaths.

Over the last few weeks I have exchanged emails with two daughters of my great uncle Thomas Leslie BELLAMY 1922-2011, who of course are my 1st cousins 1 time removed. One of his daughters had seen this website and found this article and photograph of Emily BELLAMY (née Emily ELLIS) 1883-1978. Sadly, I was to learn Thomas Leslie BELLAMY 1922-2011 had passed away in November 2011, in his 90th year.

Thomas Leslie BELLAMY 1922-2011 was the youngest child of George Albert BELLAMY 1880-Deceased and Emily BELLAMY (née Emily ELLIS) 1883-1978 and the last surviving sibling of this marriage; my grandmother Emily ASHFORTH (née Emily BELLAMY) 1903-1992 being the eldest sibling.

As a result of this exchange of emails I promised to scan and upload some more photographs relating to this family. We do have a photograph that includes Thomas Leslie BELLAMY 1922-2011 but at the moment it is with my mother, so I will have to wait a little while longer before I can scan and upload it.

The above photograph shows Emily BELLAMY (née Emily ELLIS) 1883-1978, the mother of Thomas Leslie BELLAMY 1922-2011, with her youngest sister Marjorie GREEN (née Marjorie ELLIS) 1912-1988. This photograph was most likely taken in the garden of Marjorie's 'prefab' on the Wisewood Estate, Sheffield.

Annie Elizabeth Ellis

Annie Elizabeth ELLIS was born in 1911 at Sheffield, Yorkshire, England. Our family always referred to her as Aunt Annie. I remember her as a happy, jovial person, often visiting my grandmother Emily ASHFORTH (née Emily BELLAMY) 1903-1992 and great grandmother Florence ASHFORTH (née Florence FLOWERS) 1876-1973.

Annie E ELLIS married Hector William R. Withall at Sheffield in 1923. My mother recalls Vic WITHALL was employed in newspaper production and had relocated to Sheffield from the south of England to work with one of the local newspaper companies. According to mother Uncle Vic (the family always referred to Annie's husband as Uncle Vic, so I did wonder if Hector was an incorrect transcription of Victor, though after further research I have found his name is always given as Hector) was born at Arundel, Sussex and his parents lived at a property in the shadow of Arundel Castle.

Further research shows his date of birth to be the 31st of March, 1900, in the registration district of East Preston, Arundel, Sussex. This seems to confirm my mother's recollections.

Some time after Annie and Vic were married he joined one of the Manchester based newspapers and they relocated to Moss Side, Manchester, Lancashire. During school holidays I remember I would occasionally stay at their terraced house at Moss Side, which was a much less salubrious area then than it is now.

This photograph of Florence ASHFORTH (née Florence FLOWERS 1876-1973) and Aunt Marjorie, Marjorie GREEN (née Marjorie ELLIS 1912-1988) was probably taken in the early 1960s. I'm not sure of the location though it certainly is not 4 Hawksley Road, Sheffield 6, where at this time Florence lived. The photograph may well have been taken at Aunt Marjorie's house on the Wisewood Estate, Sheffield.

2010-01-14 I made a little time to carry out some research on Marjorie GREEN (née Marjorie ELLIS 1912-1988) (Aunt Marjorie). Marjorie ELLIS was the youngest daughter of George ELLIS 1860-Deceased and Emily Ellis (née Emily ROSEWARNE 1865-1944), born September 1912 at Sheffield, Yorkshire, England. Marjorie GREEN (née Marjorie ELLIS 1912-1988) married (Jim) James GREEN d.1988 at Sheffield, March 1937.

Another photograph from the family collection, identified by my mother.

This photograph has a date stamp on the reverse of "23 Apr 1", exasperatingly the year falls off the edge of the photograph! Did photographic studios purposely do this knowing it would drive future researchers insane!

Emily BELLAMY (née Emily ELLIS 1883-1978) was my last surviving maternal great grandparent. She was born on the 23rd of July, 1883 and lived well into her nineties, passing away on the 2nd of October, 1978 at Middlewood Hospital, Sheffield.

My records show George Albert BELLAMY 1880-Deceased, a bachelor, age 21 and a 'File Cutter' by profession, residing at Quality Road, Sheffield, Yorkshire, married Emily ELLIS 1883-1978, on the 6th of October, 1901. The marriage ceremony was conducted by H A Goodwin after the reading of Banns at the Church of Saint John the Baptist, Owlerton, Sheffield.

George's father is recorded as Joseph BELLAMY 1857-Deceased and his father's profession that of 'File Cutter'. The Witnesses were Frank ELLIS and Mabel Louise ELLIS.

Frank ELLIS is most likely the uncle of Emily BELLAMY (née Emily ELLIS 1883-1978), since I have found a marriage record for a Frank ELLIS and a Mabel Louise HUMPHRIES in 1899.

On the same day that Frank ELLIS and Mabel Louise HUMPHRIES were married, I have found a record of marriage between one John Arthur BELLAMY and one Elizabeth SHELDON. Neither of these individuals feature in my GEDCOM so this is probably worth researching at a later date.

George Ellis 1860-Deceased

This is another of the certificates I recently obtained from Sheffield Register Office.

The marriage certificate of George ELLIS 1860-Deceased and Emily ELLIS (née Emily ROSEWARNE 1865-1944) provides a few clues to help further my research:
The father of George ELLIS 1860-Deceased is recorded as Mark ELLIS 1831-Deceased. Having carried out little research into George ELLIS 1860-Deceased this should prove very useful.

The father of Emily ELLIS (née Emily ROSEWARNE 1865-1944) is confirmed as Thomas ROSEWARNE 1823-1895.

Once again I will post a full transcript of this marriage certificate when time allows.

George Ellis 1860-Deceased

This photograph of my great grandfather George ELLIS 1860-Deceased must rank as one of the oldest in our family collection. Though I have not spent too much time investigating my ELLIS branch, I'm sure if I find time to visit the Sheffield Register Office I should be able to obtain at least his marriage certificate.

George ELLIS 1860-Deceased was born at Sheffield, Yorkshire and married Emily ROSEWARNE 1865-1944 during September 1882 at Sheffield.

According to my mother George was a very wealthy individual (when compared to others in the family). He owned his own factory probably grinding files, and a great deal of residential rental property in Sheffield and Rotherham. My mother recalls going out and about with him to collect rent from his tenants.

Obtaining a marriage certificate for this couple together with their birth certificates needs to be added to my 'Tasks'. Hopefully I can then establish their parents names and hopefully some indication as to where in Sheffield their respective families resided.

2007-04-22 I have now obtained the marriage certificate for George ELLIS 1860-Deceased and Emily ROSEWARNE 1865-1944. To read this update click here.
