This weekend I decided to take a break from my research of Ziller ALLEN 1858-1949 and my paternal grandfather's line; instead I concentrated on Ivy JACKLIN (née Ivy DIXON) 1901-1983, my paternal grandmother's line.

Ivy DIXON 1901-1983 was born on the 5th of October 1901 at Upton (Upton-cum-Kexby) near Gainsborough, Lincolnshire, the third child of Samuel DIXON 1869-1906 and Mary Maria DIXON (née Mary Maria MAPLETHORPE) 1878-1964. Though she has the surname DIXON, I always remember her being referred to as Grannie CARTER, a reference to her stepfather Joseph CARTER 1877-1959.

Though I have often visited Upton (Upton-cum-Kexby) and Marton, villages close to Gainsborough, Lincolnshire, the villages of Thimbleby and Winceby are new to me.
This 1880 map of Lincolnshire can be found on the Lincolnshire Wolds web site.

Notes:
1. Hagg refers to Hagworthingham.
2. Ivy DIXON was born in October 1901, thus she is not recorded in the 1901 census.

2011-12-31 After a days cycling in the Lincolnshire Wolds, and realising we were not far from the village of Thimbleby, we stopped by to take some photographs. I will endeavour to add these to the Gallery.

Wimpole Hall
Wimpole, Cambridgeshire

Earlier in the year we spent a few days vacation near Cambridge, England. During our stay we passed an afternoon at Wimpole Hall, a National Trust property, though due to time constraints we were only able to view the house and garden.

Wimpole is just a few miles from Whaddon and Orwell, the villages where my JACKLIN ancestors originate.

The Coprolite Industry

The England and Wales Census 1871 records the occupation of my gg grandfather Daniel JACKLIN 1842-1897 as 'coprolite labourer'. During this period of the 19th century the Coprolite industry provided plenty of work for the villages such as Orwell and Whaddon, south-west of Cambridge, England.

Rookery Farm, Crayke, North Yorkshire

Intrigued by the England and Wales Census 1881 record showing Daniel Jacklin 1862-1953 living in Crayke, North Yorkshire and going with my hunch that 'Rookery House' or 'Rookery Farm' might provide a clue, I Googled 'rookery house crayke'. I was amazed to find this in the 'Family Quest' section of 'The Dalesman' magazine:

EARNSHAW, request for information.

The information provided in this request matches the information from 1881 Census records. Though I have no evidence of any family link to the EARNSHAWs or WRIGHTs, it is still very satisfying to discover a few more tie-ins.

So why did the teenage Daniel Jacklin 1862-1953 move north from Orwell, Cambridgeshire and and find employment at Rookery Farm in North Yorkshire?

Notes:
In November 2004 we spent a few days in a holiday cottage on the edge of the North York Moors at Cropton near Pickering. Cropton is situated about 20 miles north-east of Crayke, and due to the fact I took the scenic route through the vale of York, we passed through many of the beautiful villages to be found in this region. This is a most beautiful part of England, agricultural and mainly undeveloped.

According to GENUKI, the Bulmer's Directory of 1890 records, under the trade of 'farmer', one John WRIGHT living at 'Rookery House', Crayke, North Yorkshire.

The England and Wales Census 1881 records John and Ellen WRIGHT living as in-laws with Richard and Ann EARNSHAW:

Is this the farm where Daniel JACKLIN 1862-1953 was living and working?

Coal Mining: South Yorkshire

Published: May 17, 2005    Last modified: May 22, 2022

Both my grandfather Wilfred JACKLIN 1896-1967 and great grandfather Daniel JACKLIN 1862-1953 worked the South Yorkshire coalfield. I am still trying to ascertain at which colliery or collieries they were employed, and for how long. There were several collieries in this area though transport would be an issue so presumably they would have worked reasonably close to home. This map courtesy of the Coal Mining Resource Centre details the South Yorkshire coalfield. Daniel JACKLIN (JACKLEN) aged 18 years appears on the England and Wales Census 1881, living and working as a labourer for Richard EARNSHAW on a farm of 62 acres at Crayke, North Yorkshire. By the time of the England and Wales Census 1891, Daniel (now age 28 years) has moved south to Bradley Yard, Aston-cum-Aughton, Rotherham, West Riding of Yorkshire, married Ziller ALLEN 1858-1949 at the Church of All Saints, Aston-cum-Aughton, and is now working as a coal miner.

Courtesy of my parents and sister I now have a some returns for the England and Wales Census 1901. These include most of my immediate family and over the next few days I will update and modify my GEDCOM.

I have not conducted any family history research for a couple of years and so I had completely overlooked the fact that we (our family) already have a birth certificate for Ziller JACKLIN (née ALLEN) 1858-1949. This oversight just highlights the fact that I desperately need to catalogue all the existing documents.

High Hazels Park, Darnall, Sheffield

Published: May 8, 2005    Last modified: May 22, 2022

Looking through the old photographs of Sheffield on Picture Sheffield, I came across some pictures of High Hazels Park, Darnall, Sheffield. My grandfather Wilfred JACKLIN 1896-1967 had an allotment on land at the edge of the park where, like a lot of the locals, he would grow produce for the table. I have many memories of these allotments and wonder if they have survived the local planning department.

At Whitsuntide we would take part in the 'Whit Walk' organised by the local churches and Sunday schools. We would don our Sunday best clothes, and with ceremonial banners and bunting providing a colourful spectacle against the dull and dreary backdrop of working class Darnall, we would proudly parade through the streets, finally assembling in High Hazels park to listen to the brass bands and take part in communal singing.

Updates:
2005-06-05 With a recent visit I can confirm the allotments would seem to have survived both the local planning department and the property developers.

Sarah Allen

While researching my previous 2 posts re: Zillah ALLEN, I came across this record (which as it turns out, I already have) from the England and Wales Census 1891. It records Daniel JACKLIN 1862-1953 and Ziller JACKLIN (née ALLEN) 1858-1949 living at Aston-cum-Aughton so I decided to browse through some of the other households in the same area with a hunch that other members of the family may have relocated to the same area in order to find work in the coal mines. I eventually found this entry:

FHJ Ref: 013
Census: England and Wales Census 1891

According to this entry Sarah BUTROID was born in Little Gringley, Nottinghamshire, England. Intuition told me that this could well be Sarah BUTROID (née Sarah ALLEN).

An online search eventually produced the result I had expected:

Marriages in the district of East Retford for the period Dec 1884: Jesse BUTROID married Sarah ALLEN.

The dates are what I would expect. My only concern now is that some of the children I have linked to John ALLEN 1831- of Little Gringley, Nottinghamshire, England are still based on conjecture.

Zillah Allen: Forum message: Update

I was a little quick off the mark with my previous post. The email address I replied to was indeed 'live' and I received a speedy reply. Unfortunately it became clear that we have two different families here, though I image if we go a little further back in time they will undoubtedly be closely linked.

Having checked the England and Wales Census 1891 there are indeed two Zillah ALLENs recorded in Nottinghamshire:

FHJ Ref: 012

The census record above shows a Zillah ALLEN at Carlton, Nottinghamshire.

The other is my great grandmother Ziller JACKLIN (née ALLEN) 1858-1949, who at this time was still single and living with her sister-in-law at East Drayton, Nottinghamshire, England.
