Ellis
Emily Ellis 1883-1978
Another family photograph which my mother has identified.
This photograph has a date stamp on the reverse of "23 Apr 1", exasperatingly the year falls off the edge of the photograph! Did photographic studios purposely do this knowing it would drive future researchers insane!
Emily BELLAMY (née ELLIS) 1883-1978 was my last surviving maternal great grandparent. She was born on the 23rd of July, 1883 and lived well into her nineties, passing away on the 2nd of October, 1978 at Middlewood Hospital, Sheffield.

Finally I have found time to transcribe the marriage certificates for:
All the certificates I have so far transcribed can be accessed from the top menu 'Sources' or click here to be taken to the 'Sources' page.
Marriage Certificate - George Ellis and Emily Ellis (née Rosewarne)
This is another of the certificates I recently obtained from the Registry Office at Sheffield.
The marriage certificate of George ELLIS and Emily ELLIS (née ROSEWARNE) provides a few clues to help further my research:
The father of George ELLIS is recorded as Mark ELLIS. Having carried out little research into George ELLIS this should prove very useful.
The father of Emily Ellis (née ROSEWARNE) is confirmed as Thomas ROSEWARNE.
Once again I will post a full transcript of this marriage certificate when time allows.

Sheffield Register Office - More certificates
With reference to this previous post:
I have returned from a weeks holiday to find the certificates I recently requested from the Register Office at Sheffield have arrived. A quick perusal of these certificates leaves me wondering if I am any the wiser.
Certificates - Sheffield Register Office
I have posted off an order for the following certificates to Sheffield Register Office:
Birth Certificate:
Marriage Certificate:
Hopefully this will provide the information I need to extend my research of these lines.
George Ellis 1860-
This photograph of my great grandfather George ELLIS must rank as one of the oldest in our collection. Though I have not spent too much time investigating my ELLIS branch, I'm sure if I find time to visit the Sheffield Register Office I should be able to obtain at least his wedding certificate.
George ELLIS was born at Sheffield, Yorkshire, circa 1860. He married Emily ROSEWARNE b1865 in September 1882 at Sheffield.
According to my mother George was a very wealthy individual (when compared to others in the family). He owned his own factory probably grinding files, and a great deal of residential rental property in Sheffield and Rotherham. My mother recalls going out and about with him to collect rent from his tenants.
Obtaining a marriage certificate for this couple together with their birth certificates needs to be added to my 'Tasks'. Hopefully I can then establish their parents names and hopefully some indication as to where in Sheffield their respective families resided.
Update: 2007-04-22 I have now obtained the marriage certificate for George ELLIS and Emily Rosewarne. Click here to read what I ascertained.

Bellamy - Bellarmy
Earlier this year I obtained the 1901 British Census return for the household of Joseph BELLAMY. This is an outline of my transcription:
Address: 156 Martin St
Civil Parish: Nether Hallam
Town or Village or Hamlet: Sheffield
Parliamentary Borough or Division: Hallam
Eccleslastical Parish: St Philips
Administrative County: SheffieldBELLAMY Joseph, Head, M, 44, M, File Cutter, Worker, Sheffield, Yorkshire
BELLAMY Mary Ann, Wife, M, 40, F,, Undefined, Sheffield, Yorkshire
BELLAMY George Albert, Son, S, 21, M, File Cutter, Worker, Sheffield, Yorkshire
BELLAMY Mary Alice, Daughter, S, 16, F,, Undefined, Sheffield, Yorkshire
BELLAMY Edith, Daughter, S, 11, F,, Undefined, Sheffield, Yorkshire
BELLAMY Edward, Son, S, 2, M,, Undefined, Sheffield, Yorkshire
Studying in more detail this information, I realise my previous research is probably flawed. Read my earlier post... I have a copy of the marriage certificate for George Albert BELLAMY and Emily ELLIS so I can validate George Alberts's father being recorded as Joseph BELLAMY and his mother as Mary Ann.
Searching the 1881 census I realise the problem is quite simple; BELLAMY is now BELLARMY.
Dwelling: 89 Martin St
Census Place: Nether Hallam, Yorkshire, England
PRO: RG11
Piece/Folio: 4621/43
Page Number: 25BELLARMY Joseph, Head, M, Male, 24, Sheffield, Yorkshire, England, File Cutter, Unemployed
BELLARMY Mary Ann, Wife, M, Female, 20, Sheffield, Yorkshire, England
BELLARMY George Albert, Son, U, Male, 1, Sheffield, Yorkshire, England
Searches on FreeCEN returns zero results.
I will add a note to my earlier posts expressing my doubts as to the accuracy of the data.
George Ellis and Emily Rosewarne
I recall my mother saying details for the ELLIS line of our family are few and far between. With this in mind I searched FreeBMD in order to match George ELLIS with a spouse. Eventually in Sheffield I found a likely marriage between one George ELLIS and one Emily ROSEWARNE. The date of September 1882 matched my expectations, and furthermore, the name ROSEWARNE seemed somewhat familiar.
A few days later my mother confirmed the name ROSEWARNE and supplied some very valuable additional information regarding George ELLIS and Emily ROSEWARNE. More searching revealed the surname ROSEWARNE to be indigenous to the Redruth and Penzance areas of Cornwall. This makes searching the Sheffield area somewhat easier.
Sarah Ann Bellamy
Continuing my search for a BELLAMY and a ROTHERHAM I found a marriage entry that includes both.
Marriages Sep 1881
BELLAMY Sarah Ann, Sheffield
PETTY William Toyne, Sheffield
ROTHERHAM Frederick, Sheffield
SMITH Lucy Anne, Sheffield
I think I can safely assume that Sarah Ann BELLAMY and Frederick ROTHERHAM married, gave birth to a son Frederick ROTHERHAM, and the grandson was included in the 1891 British Census of his grandparents' household.
My earlier search that established a link to Richard ROTHERHAM and Frances Lily ELLIS still provides plenty of intrigue!
Update: 2005-12-15 Further research has shown this data is probably not linked to my family. This data may prove useful to other researchers so I will retain it.
Frederick Rotherham
The 1891 British Census records Frederick ROTHERHAM living with George Albert BELLAMY and Emily BELLAMY (née ELLIS) and classified as 'grandson'. While trying to establish a marriage between a ROTHERHAM and a BELLAMY I came across this entry:
Marriages Mar 1891
Ellis, Frances Lily Ecclesall B. 9c 385
GALVIN Thomas Saywell Ecclesall Bierlow 9c 385
Heathcote Eleanor Ecclesall B. 9c 385
Rotherham Richard Ecclesall B. 9c 385
Thompson Elizabeth Ecclesall B. 9c 385
I feel sure I have heard my mother mention the name Frances Lily ELLIS so it may prove interesting to research this entry to see if there is a link between Richard ROTHERHAM and Frances Lily ELLIS.
Update: 2005-12-15 Further research has shown this data is probably not linked to my family. This data may prove useful to other researchers so I will retain it.
