Ziller Jacklin (née Ziller Allen 1858-1949)

Mother of Eliza Allen 1882-Deceased"][/caption]

After several years and a great deal of research, I may have solved my 'Elizabeth Allen' conundrum.

Just to recap, Elizabeth ALLEN 1882-Deceased appears in the England and Wales Census 1891 as a niece to Daniel JACKLIN 1862-1953 and Zillah JACKLIN (née Ziller ALLEN 1858-1949). I have always been intrigued by this niece but even with much research I had never been able to establish her place in the family tree:

Recently, while researching Zillah LITTLEWOOD (Zillah FENTON abt. 1807-1862), I was using FreeReg and searching the Nottinghamshire registers for various spellings of the forename 'Zillah'. At some point I must have decided to search for 'Zillah Allen', my great grandmother. Luckily I happened to have checked the 'Family members', 'Witnesses' and 'Soundtex' boxes and this returned two results:

Name: Eliza ALLEN
Event: Baptism
Date: 04 Mar 1882
Place: Nottinghamshire, Clarborough
Church: St Saviour
Type: Parish Register

and

Name: Sarah ALLEN and Issac BUTROID
Event: Marriage
Date: 28 Oct 1884
Place: Nottinghamshire, Clarborough
Church: St Saviour
Type: Parish Register

I was already aware, thanks to KG, of Sarah ALLEN 1862-1943 and Issac BUTROID 1862-1943's marriage, (Zilla ALLEN was a witness to the marriage of her sister Sarah, hence its inclusion in these results), but I was very surprised, when on expanding these search results, I saw that Eliza ALLEN's mother was Zilla ALLEN and Eliza's place of birth, Little Gringley. The record gives Eliza's date of birth as 14th February 1882.

So it transpires prior to Zilla ALLEN's marriage to Daniel JACKLIN and the birth of their son and my grandfather Wilfred JACKLIN 1896-1967, Ziller ALLEN had two daughters by fathers' unknown:

Georgiana ALLEN 1878-1965
Eliza ALLEN 1882-Deceased

In order to confirm this baptism record I can now try to obtain a birth certificate for Eliza ALLEN.

For quite some time I had not used FreeReg, since areas of the country I am interested in were not well covered. So I was very pleased to find that FreeReg is a very useful tool when searching the Nottinghamshire registers.

Issac BUTROID is also known as Jesse BUTROID

Wilfred Jacklin 1926-1926: Died age 6 hours

Published: February 11, 2017    Last modified: October 14, 2017

My great grandparents Daniel JACKLIN 1862-1953 and Ziller JACKLIN (née Ziller ALLEN 1858-1949) were both buried at the Orgreave Lane section of Handsworth Cemetery, Sheffield, but as I noted in this article, despite having the plot number I have failed to find their grave.

It crossed my mind that I may have been mistaken about Orgreave Lane and they were actually buried in the graveyard of the Church of Saint Mary, Handsworth, Sheffield. While searching burial records for Daniel and Ziller JACKLIN I came across a burial record for Wilfred JACKLIN 1926-1926 the second child of my grandparents Wilfred JACKLIN 1896-1967 and Ivy JACKLIN (née Ivy DIXON 1901-1983).

I was aware that within a month of his birth Wilfred died, but the record shows he lived for only 6 hours: so very, very sad.

He is recorded having died at 23 Beighton Road, though to correct the record, this should be 23 Beighton Street (now demolished). He was buried on the 9th of December 1926 at Darnall Cemetery, Sheffield; another cemetery I do not recall visiting.

I have a vague idea of where Darnall Cemetery is located, though Sheffield City Council have a very informative cemeteries website giving all the details. I will endeavour to set aside some time to explore Darnall Cemetery, though having checked on Google Earth, the approximate location of his grave, I do not hold out much hope; the area he was buried looks very much devoid of headstones.

George Jacklin: The search for his wife's maiden name

Emily Grace Pearce 1899-1987: Family Tree (edited excerpt)

Yesterday, the weather being particularly cold and inhospitable, I decided to stay indoors, keep warm and organise into some sort of order, my numerous scanned images; this did not get very far.

Soon I came across a scanned image of Aunt Grace's family tree, an edited excerpt of which is shown above, of which I have discussed before in this previous article: Emily Grace Pearce: Jacklin Family Tree

George JACKLIN was a younger brother of my great grandfather Daniel JACKLIN. Looking at my GEDCOM I realised that I had never seriously researched George JACKLIN and his descendants.

According to my research George and Daniel JACKLIN were both born at Whaddon, Cambridgeshire, though depending on the source, my ancestors born at Whaddon often migrate to Orwell and vice versa. The villages are nearby and seem to be used in parish records and various censuses, by my ancestors, interchangeably!

Over the last few years on-line publicly accessible databases have grown enormously so I thought I would be able to establish births and marriages quite quickly, and possibly, though with more difficulty, deaths.

Well one of the problems with this family tree is that it consists mainly of forenames, and in some cases, shortened familiar names; this was going to be my downfall.

I had in my GEDCOM the surname of GLOVER as being the likely maiden name of George JACKLIN's wife. I had not made a note of the source but it most likely came from a quick search of FreeBMD.

Now the problem with GLOVER is that it conflicts with the information cited in Aunt Grace's family tree. Aunt Grace has written "George m. ? Jeanette Barker". Does the question mark indicate she is not certain regards the first name 'Jeanette': does it indicate other first names, or does it indicate she is not certain about the whole name?

I searched on various forms of Jeanette, a not so common first name, without result. I substituted BARBER for BARKER but could only come back with a Emily BAXTER - George JACKLIN or Emily GLOVER - George JACKLIN marriage as being remotely possible, matching dates and locations. In fact I tried every permutation I could think of; still no result. Eventually I decided to concentrate on George's children.

This becomes much easier of course, once one passes the September quarter of 1912, when birth registrations record the mother's maiden name.

So following Aunt Grace's tree I quickly established the year and district of birth for all the names that Aunt Grace listed. Many of these descendants will still be alive so I will not document them publicly. The descendants known to have passed away, I will document here:

George JACKLIN had three children:

Ada JACKLIN married Thomas HOWELLS and had 1 child.
William JACKLIN married Rosa F BROTHERS and had 2 children.
Emily JACKLIN married William HOWLETT and as far as I can establish did not have children.

I successfully traced all subsequent generations and will add them to my GEDCOM, though of course there could well be other children that have yet to be transcribed. Aunt Grace does record the passing of Lilian, William and Emily.

I then returned to the problem of George's wife's maiden name. I moved on to parish records and censuses and eventually made what I thought could be a vital breakthrough: I discovered a christening for one William George Daniel JACKLIN at the Church of Saint Mark, Enfield, Middlesex on the 2nd of June 1895.The father's name being George JACKLIN and the mother's name Agnes Emily Janette JACKLIN. The first mention of a 'Jeanette' that all my searches had found.

I then checked the England and Wales Census 1901:

FHJ Ref: 044
Census: England and Wales Census 1901
Household: George Jacklin

SURNAMEFIRST NAME(S)RELSTATUSSEXAGEOCCUPATIONWHERE BORNREMARKS

To view this table full width please click here.

Having found the name 'Agnes Emily Janette JACKLIN' the 1901 census shows Agnes I E JACKLIN though the substitution of 'I' for the 'J' could be a transcription error.

Having gleaned all this information and a quite distinct series of forenames one would assume I would quickly arrive at George's wife's maiden name; this was not to be. Even after further research, I could not establish beyond reasonable doubt Agnes Emily JACKLIN's maiden name.

Several members of the JACKLIN dynasty of Orwell and Whaddon, Cambridgeshire, did relocate to the Edmonton and Enfield districts of Middlesex as mentioned in this previous article: Hannah Jacklin and the unknown grandfather

The districts of Enfield and Edmonton are what I would expect. Several JACKLIN's born at Whaddon or Orwell are sometimes documented as being from nearby Royston, Hertfordshire (a town that in the past has changed County several times).

The names, particularly the forenames, provide the greatest curiosity:

Aunt Grace documents 'Lill' and 'Lilian' yet my searches found Rosa F BROTHERS, neither of the Agnes' seems to use their first name and following a few more searches, even George JACKLIN's birth place becomes somewhat of a mystery. More research required!

There will be several updates to this article; of that I am certain.

Notes:
Looking again at my Aunt Grace's family tree, I noticed, in another branch of the tree, the surname Glover: Ivy GLOVER married Cyril Gordon PEARCE, a nephew of George JACKLIN 1865-1944 during 1929. Cyril Gordon PEARCE 1907-Deceased was the 4th child of Emily PEARCE (née Emily JACKLIN 1871-1951) and Henry PEARCE 1881-1993 (my gg aunt and uncle) and the brother of Aunt Grace who produced this family tree.

The family tree shows Cyril Gordon remarried in 1941 but gives no clues to the reason. Looking at my notes I found a death in 1934 in the Cambridgshire area, for one Ivy PEARCE aged 29 years. Curiously I have her date of passing as the 3rd of January 1934, a burial place of Whaddon, Cambridgshire, and a note indicating she died of TB. For whatever reason I have not recorded the source of this information. I cannot for the life of me remember how or where I came across this information.

Georgiana Ward (née Georgiana Allen 1879-1965)

Published: March 14, 2015    Last modified: February 21, 2024

Ziller Jacklin (née Ziller Allen 1858-1949)

This information has taken me quite some time to document and publish but at the time it came as quite a surprise:

Through the "Suggest a change" form at Family History Journal I received the following email:

Proposed Change: Ziller ALLEN (I22)
Tree: Jacklin / Ashforth
Link: Ziller ALLEN
Description: Zillah was mother of Georgina 06/03/1879-1965 father not registered. Georgina(eanor) married Charles Henry Ward 1896 Aston parish church Sheffield. Zillah is my G.G.Grandmother.

Basically this email informed me that my grandfather Wilfred Jacklin 1896-1967 had a step sister by the name of Georgina (Georgiana). I immediately phoned my aunt, the daughter of Wilfred Jacklin 1896-1967 and Ivy JACKLIN (née Ivy DIXON) 1901-1983 and asked if she was aware of this step sister; no she wasn't.

So this opened up a whole new avenue to explore.

I replied to BW and he provided me with a synopsis of Georgiana's family history:
Georgiana known to the family as Georgina married Charles Henry Ward at Aston Parish Church¹ and had 8 children. The eldest daughter had 5 children including the mother of BW.

I sent for Georgiana's birth certificate because Fanny Allen² would have been in her 50s when she was born. I have enclosed copies of birth and marriage
certificates. The name on the marriage certificate is Eanor which is a mystery to the family.

¹ Aston Parish Church is the Church of All Saints, Aston-cum-Aughton, Rotherham, Yorkshire.

² Fanny ALLEN (née Fanny LITTLEWOOD) 1832-1915, the mother of Ziller (Zillah, Zellaby) ALLEN 1858-1949

In the census record shown below, Georgina, or Georgiana ALLEN 1879-1965 is shown to be 2 years old and a grandaughter of John ALLEN 1831-Deceased, though at this time Ziller ALLEN 1858-1949 is living and working at East Drayton, Nottinghamshire, in the the household of George SMITHSON 1830-Deceased.

Hannah Jacklin and the unknown grandfather

The sudden re-kindling of my interest in the JACKLIN line of my family and the reason for my previous two articles has been brought about by an email I received via this website. The email was sent by a descendant of the family of James GUNN and Hannah JACKLIN 1874-1934 and opens up a little of the history of one of my gg grandfather's daughters.

"Hannah left home when she was about 14-15 years of age and went to live with her brother Jabez in Edmonton, London. She met my great grandfather James GUNN and married him aged 18 on the 26th of April 1891 in Enfield Middlesex. His father was Jacob GUNN, her father was Daniel JACKLIN 1842-1897. The two witnesses are Arthur JACKLIN and Jessie JACKLIN (who made her mark).
I have a copy of this certificate and a photo of an unknown grandfather with two children and a child on his lap. I am assured by my father this is part of our JACKLIN family but he cannot remember which man it is, he is 90 now, and his memory is not what it was. You may use them as you see fit. You never know somebody might put a name to the people in the photo." -  ARG

Hannah JACKLIN 1874-1934 is a daughter of my gg grandparents Daniel JACKLIN 1842-1897 and Lydia JACKLIN (née Lydia PEARCE 1843-1922) and sister of Daniel JACKLIN 1862-1953 (my great grandfather) and Jabez JACKLIN 1868-Deceased mentioned in the text above.

I have done very little research on my JACKLIN line so when I received this email and studied its contents I immediately remembered the family tree of Aunt Grace's that I found while sifting through the family papers earlier this year.

I always find it quite exciting when a person contacts me and suddenly with one email opens up a whole new vista on a part of the family I would never get to research during this lifetime.

So hopefully fate will intervene and someone out there will browse these pages and recognise a person in the accompanying photograph and put names to faces.

I will transcribe the marriage certificate of James GUNN and Hannah JACKLIN 1874-1934 and add it to the certificates folder.

The two witnesses to Hannah and Jame's marriage, Arthur JACKLIN and Jessie JACKLIN may require some research, at this moment in time I haven't a clue as to their place in the family tree.

Emily Grace Pearce 1899-1987 and Rosalie Faith Pearce 1902-1958

Emily Grace Pearce 1899-Deceased

Daniel JACKLIN 1842-1897 and Lydia PEARCE 1843-1922 married on Christmas Eve, 1864 at Orwell, Cambridgeshire. This marriage produced 5 children:

  1. Daniel JACKLIN 1862-1953 my great grandfather
  2. George JACKLIN 1866-Deceased
  3. Jabez JACKLIN 1868-Deceased
  4. Emily JACKLIN 1871-1951
  5. Hannah JACKLIN 1874-1934

Emily JACKLIN 1871-1951 married Henry PEARCE 1881-1933 in 1899 at Royston which borders on the counties of Hertfordshire and Cambridgeshire. This marriage produced 3 children:

  1. Emily Grace PEARCE 1899-1987
  2. Rosalie Faith PEARCE 1902-1958
  3. Harry Stanley PEARCE 1904-Deceased

Though I do not remember having met either Emily Grace known to the family as Aunt Grace or Rosalie Faith known as Aunt Rose, my mother remembers visiting Aunt Grace at her home in Whaddon.

Questioning my mother about the sisters I was able to glean the following:
Emily Grace PEARCE 1899-1987 was an undergraduate at Jesus College Cambridge and later the headmistress at Pontefract and District Girls School, Pontefract, Yorkshire which closed I think in the 1950's.
Rosalie Faith PEARCE 1902-1958 was a teacher and possibly headmistress at Whaddon Church of England School, Whaddon, Cambridgeshire. This closed I think in the 1930's and eventually became the village hall.

I have not been able to substantiate any of these claims despite much searching of various websites.

Neither sister ever married and Aunt Grace eventually retired from teaching and retired to a large house on the edge of Whaddon village. I know less about Aunt Rose so it would be really nice if someone that remembers the sisters would contact me through this site.

I have yet to determine when and where the two sisters passed away but Aunt Grace was certainly alive in 1981. I probably need to speak with my late father's sister, since she probably had the most contact with Grace and Rose.

Updates:
2012-02-13 I recently came across this article on the Meldreth History website.

"Miss R Pearce (teacher) is to be congratulated on the excellence of this performance, being a “past master” in the handling of puppets." - The Herts and Cambs Reporter and Royston Crow

Meldreth is a village close to Orwell and Whaddon.

Jacklin Family Tree
Daniel Jacklin 1842-1897 and Lydia Jacklin (née Lydia Pearce) 1843-1922

In March 2010 my mother decided to sell the family home of 40 years and move into a more manageable apartment. The result of this decision was of course the obligatory emptying of the attic and other nooks and crannies. During this process many artefacts and documents that had not seen the light of day for many a year were unearthed then passed to me for safe keeping.

Several weeks later I was sorting through an old cardboard suitcase that contained many of the smaller items including numerous envelopes containing correspondence and newspaper clippings. I eventually came across an envelope containing a single sheet of folded paper. On unfolding the paper I realised someone had sketched a family tree showing JACKLIN line descendants beginning with my great great grandparents Daniel JACKLIN 1842-1897 and Lydia Jacklin (née Lydia PEARCE) 1843-1922 and ending at 1981, the date I believe the document was created. Notes detailing those that were known to have passed away and the whereabouts of some of the living had been added.

This family tree had been sketched out with blue ink on paper and posted to my parents in 1981. I am fairly certain of the date since the postmark is clearly legible and the document has been folded to fit the length of the envelope. Though very few dates and surnames are available it may prove invaluable in researching branches of our family tree.

I mentioned this to my mother and she confirmed that the document had been created by Emily Grace PEARCE 1899-1987 otherwise known as Aunt Grace from Whaddon, Cambridgeshire.

Daniel and Lydia JACKLIN had 5 children:

Daniel JACKLIN 1862-1953
George JACKLIN 1866-Deceased
Jabez JACKLIN 1868-Deceased
Emily JACKLIN 1871-1951
Hannah JACKLIN 1874-1934

Daniel was born at Orwell. George, Jabez, Emily and Hannah were born at Whaddon.

I have scanned the document and added it to my gallery though to preserve the privacy of known living people I have intentionally only provided a thumbnail of the original image. Anyone wishing to see the full size document should contact me using my contact form.

Elizabeth Allen or Elizabeth Smithson?

Published: September 29, 2008    Last modified: October 18, 2017

While checking this earlier article, one of the earliest articles on this website, the name Elizabeth SMITHSON 1879-Deceased caught my eye.

This is my transcription of the England and Wales Census 1881:

FHJ Ref: 002
Census: England and Wales Census 1881

These records suggest Jane SMITHSON (née Jane ALLEN 1853-1892) had 2 children, either from a previous marriage or 'out of wedlock'.

I suddenly realised that Elizabeth SMITHSON 1879-Deceased, Jane's daughter presumably from her marriage to George SMITHSON 1830-Deceased, could be the elusive Elizabeth 'Betty' ALLEN.

A search of FreeBMD reveals a death, registered at Retford in March 1892 of one Jane SMITHSON aged 40 years. Elizabeth SMITHSON 1879-Deceased would now be about 12 years of age.

The England and Wales Census 1891 records the following:

FHJ Ref: 007

I conjecture Jane had fallen ill and was unable to care for Elizabeth her youngest child and Daniel JACKLIN 1862-1953 and Ziller JACKLIN (née Ziller ALLEN 1858-1949) agreed to 'adopt' her.

A quick search of the England and Wales Census 1901 reveals an Elizabeth SMITHSON aged 22 years living at East Drayton.

Another search of FreeBMD this time for a marriage for Elizabeth SMITHSON reveals several, but the only one in an anticipated locality is registered in December 1909 at Rotherham, Yorkshire. The husbands name could either be Thomas DAVIS or Fred KEIGHLEY.

At this time Daniel JACKLIN 1862-1953 and Ziller JACKLIN (née Ziller ALLEN 1858-1949) were probably still living at Swallownest so it could well be Elizabeth SMITHSON 1879-Deceased married at the Church of All Saints at Aston-cum-Aughton which of course is in the registration district of Rotherham.

This is all conjecture and supposition at the moment and the dates, though not exactly what I would expect, are close enough to warrant further research. Since I am unlikely to glean much more from FreeBMD or the England and Wales Census, I will invest in the purchase of the marriage certificate and hope that I can prove my theory.

Aston-cum-Aughton and Treeton: Coal Miners

Published: April 21, 2008    Last modified: May 22, 2022

The England and Wales Census 1891 records 3 of the Allen sisters:

Sarah BUTROID (née Sarah ALLEN 1862-1943)
Hannah CUTTS (née Hannah ALLEN 1856-Deceased)
Ziller JACKLIN (née Ziller ALLEN 1858-1949) my great grandmother,

All originally from Little Gringley, Nottinghamshire and all now married and living at Aston-cum-Aughton and nearby Treeton. Their respective husbands are all recorded as coal miners.

I am intrigued as to how the sisters found their way to this area. I conjecture Daniel JACKLIN 1862-1953 and Ziller JACKLIN (née Ziller ALLEN 1858-1949) were forced to escape the poverty of living off the land at Little Gringley and seek a slightly more prosperous existence in the employment of the mine owners of the South Yorkshire coalfield. Likewise did the other sisters follow? Did they meet their husbands through the mining community or were they already married?

Daniel had left his home county of Cambridgeshire, presumably to seek work as a navvy on the railways or canals, both of which pass through Retford, Nottinghamshire and very close to Little Gringley.

I really need to study the relevant census information together with marriage certificates and maybe I can better ascertain when they made the transition from agricultural labourer to coal miner.

Church of All Saints, Aston with Aughton, Rotherham, Yorkshire

Recently I was discussing with my mother the news regarding Harriet BARLOW (née Harriet ALLEN 1877-1958) and Mary BACON (née Mary ALLEN 1871-1951). We were chatting about Daniel JACKLIN 1862-1953 and Ziller JACKLIN (née Ziller ALLEN 1858-1949) and if they ever had visits from other members of the family (Daniel and Ziller moved from Bradley Yard, Swallownest, Yorkshire and lived the rest of their lives at Langley Street, Darnall, Sheffield, Yorkshire). My mother happened to mention that they brought up a young girl known by the name of Betty, and Betty would occasionally visit. Immediately I recalled the census record shown below which records Elizabeth aged 9 and described as a niece; undoubtedly this is Betty.

The England and Wales Census 1891 records the following:

FHJ Ref: 007
Census: England and Wales Census 1891
Place: Bradley Yard, Aston With Aughton, Rotherham, Yorkshire
Household: Daniel Jacklin

My mother went on to say how in November 1949, Betty attended Ziller's funeral, but my mother could not remember any details regarding her family background.

Was Elizabeth really a niece or maybe a child from another relationship? The mystery and intrigue continues.

Updates:
2008-09-22 This weekend I spoke with my aunt and she understands that after Betty's father died Betty was 'adopted' by Daniel JACKLIN 1862-1953 and Ziller JACKLIN (née Ziller ALLEN 1858-1949). Apparently her mother was already dead. On getting married Betty moved to Bury, Lancashire.
