Coprolite

Published: January 16, 2006    Last modified: November 28, 2016

I'm not sure how I came by this link about Coprolite or why it has taken such a long time to find, but since it pertains to Coprolite and the village of Bassingbourn, Cambridgeshire, I thought I should record it here. My line of JACKLIN's originate from this area; the England and Wales Census 1871 records my great great grandfather Daniel JACKLIN 1842-1897's occupation as 'Coprolite labourer'.

Wikipedia also has an entry for Coprolite.

Frederick Thomas Cutts abt. 1885-Deceased and Hannah Allen abt. 1856-Deceased

Published: December 13, 2005    Last modified: May 22, 2022

Earlier this year I wrote about coming upon Hannah CUTTS (née Hannah ALLEN abt. 1856-Deceased) and Frederick CUTTS abt.1885-Deceased living at Treeton, Rotherham, Yorkshire. To read this article please click here.

My great grandparents Daniel JACKLIN 1862-1953 and Ziller JACKLIN (née Ziller ALLEN 1858-1949) lived close by at Aston-cum-Aughton. I presume all had relocated to this area to take up employment with local coal mining companies.

A few searches of the England and Wales Census 1901 show the family still living in this mining community. My transcription from the Census is as follows:

FHJ Ref: 024
Census: England and Wales Census 1901
Place: Treeton, Rotherham, Yorkshire
Household: Frederick Cutts

Note: Morehen, Yorkshire is more likely Morthen, Yorkshire

* Most likely this should be Morthen

A major criticism of the 1901 Census is the poor quality of transcription: I must agree.

Notes:
Lily is no longer listed though an additional son Ernest is now shown. Is Elizabeth now 'Letty'? If so her age does not equate with that recorded in the England & Wales Census 1891. Curious.

Parish Church of Saint Andrew, Wimpole, Cambridgeshire

Parish Church of Saint Andrew, Wimpole, Cambridgeshire

In March of this year during a few days staying at Barton Mills, Suffolk we made a fleeting visit to Wimpole Hall, Wimpole, Cambridgeshire.

Standing within the grounds of Wimpole Hall is the Parish Church of Saint Andrew, which though being very close to the hall, is totally independent of both Wimpole Hall and the National Trust which administers the Hall.

The www.wimpole.info web site provides a valuable archive of Wimpole, Orwell and nearby villages.

This site provides a transcript of www.wimpole.info/marriages_1800.htm "The Registers for the Parish of Wimpole, Cambridgeshire" and contains several references to JACKLIN.

This extract shows a reference to a Daniel JACKLIN being a witness to the marriage of Stephen JACKLIN and Jane WHITBY.

4 December 1858
JACKLIN Stephen, of Whaddon, bachelor, labourer, son of John, labourer
WHITBY Jane, spinster, servant, daughter of John, labourer
Witnesses: Daniel JACKLIN and Elizabeth WRIGHT

I thought this might be my gg grandfather Daniel JACKLIN 1842-1897. He would have been 16 years old in 1858; too young to be a marriage witness?

More likely this was Daniel JACKLIN who eventually married Elizabeth WRIGHT at Bassingbourn on 18th April 1863.

Both were descendants of James JACKLIN 1767-1836 and Ann HOWES 1775-1851.

2010-10-15 The domain at www.wimpole.info seems to have expired so I have deactivated the links.

2016-11-01 I have added a link to the nearby village of Orwell, where many of the JACKLIN's originated.

2016-11-01 I came across this wonderful site: The Parishes of Arrington, Croydon, Orwell and Wimpole: Local History

"Between 1999 and 2006 I set up and maintained a number of local history websites for Arrington, Croydon, Orwell and Wimpole - four ancient parishes located in South Cambridgeshire, some seven miles west of the university city of Cambridge. For various reasons (mainly employment) the sites gradually died and the domains eventually lapsed. Seven years on and I have been challenged to get the information back out online. Retirement and the discovery of an old pre-USB back-up disc have negated my long (and completely plausible) list of excuses - so here once again are several hundred original web pages, frozen in all their pre-2006 pre-broadband glory! Enjoy the minimal graphics, iffy designs, dodgy navigation and the largely pre-CSS coding." - Steve [September 2013]

Daniel Jacklen (Jacklin): Census 1881: Crayke, North Yorkshire

Church of Saint Cuthbert, Crayke, North Yorkshire

The weather on Saturday was obviously going to be hot and sunny so we quickly changed plans and decided to visit Newby Hall and Gardens, near Ripon, North Yorkshire.

Later in the afternoon and wondering what to do next we decided to eat at a pub restaurant somewhere along our route home. We had a couple of hours to spare before the pubs opened and realising Crayke could not be far from our current location I set our recently acquired 'satnav' to guide us to the village of Crayke. Negotiating all the minor roads around North Yorkshire is usually a nightmare but the 'satnav' proved its worth and 30 minutes later we were standing in the grounds the Church of Saint Cuthbert, Crayke.

The England and Wales Census 1881 records Daniel JACKLEN (Daniel JACKLIN 1862-1953) living and working at Rookery House, Crayke. I have little idea how or why Daniel came to be at Crayke.

Notes:
Since I had not planned to visit Crayke, I found myself in the somewhat frustrating position of being able to recall the name of the property (Rookery House) but not its location, other than it being on the outskirts of the village. Normally I have some digital Ordnance Survey maps stored on my PDA but on this occasion not the one I required. Only later did I realise that I had twice driven past the end of the lane which leads to Rookery House. In retrospect I suppose I should have asked one of the local villagers.

Handsworth Cemetery, Sheffield

Published: June 6, 2005    Last modified: November 11, 2016

Due to the rather unpredictable weather, we decided, on the spur of the moment, to visit Handsworth Cemetery, Sheffield, in order to locate the graves of Daniel JACKLIN 1862-1953 and Ziller JACKLIN (née Ziller ALLEN) 1858-1949.

Finding the cemetery was an achievment in itself. Trying to navigate and search for a cemetery even through Sunday traffic, meant a few wasted trips up and down the busy Handsworth Road. That is until I realised the entrance is off Orgreave Lane.

The only clue I had to the location of the grave was the grave number. The Sheffield City Council website appears to be down so I could not get a plan in advance. There was a basic plan at the entrance to the cemetery and it was easy enough to find the correct section. It would appear the lower side of the cemetery has been 're-organised', by which I mean the headstones appear to have been made safe, re-aligned and any superfluous masonary removed. I checked the section several times and re-checked the cemetery plan several times, but all to no avail. A JACKLIN headstone could not be found. I will try and obtain more information, then I will return and try again.

The top side of the cemetery is in a very sorry state with a high percentage of headstones being laid flat for safety reasons; take this to mean Sheffield City Council's lack of commitment as the custodians of our heritage.

Notes:

  1. A rather ironic title from the Health and Safety Executive: Live issues - message regarding safety of cemetary (sic) memorials - FAQs
  2. Sheffield City Council: Survey of Cemetery Memorials

I wonder how many people died tripping, slipping or falling due to uneven pavements...

Jesse Butroid and Sarah Allen

Published: June 1, 2005    Last modified: February 17, 2017

A few weeks ago I made this link between Sarah ALLEN and Jesse BUTROID. Browsing the England and Wales Census 1891 I found them living close to Daniel JACKLIN and Ziller JACKLIN (née Ziller ALLEN), my great grandparents, at Aston-cum-Aughton. Searches for Jesse BUTROID and Jesse BUTROYD were inconclusive so I moved on to other research. What a pleasant surprise when a couple of days ago I was emailed by a descendant of Jesse BUTROID and Sarah BUTROID (née Sarah ALLEN). The descendant found my Family Tree page and some notes I had saved while searching for Jesse BUTROID. He very kindly provided some of the missing details. I am now able to confirm Sarah ALLEN did indeed marry Jesse BUTROID and can now update my GEDCOM and Family History pages. I have also been able to corroborate the dates of various events sorrounding the ALLEN and BUTROID families. Some days are much better than others and some days the world gets smaller!

The Coprolite Industry

The England and Wales Census 1871 records the occupation of my gg grandfather Daniel JACKLIN 1842-1897 as 'coprolite labourer'. During this period of the 19th century the Coprolite industry provided plenty of work for the villages such as Orwell and Whaddon, south-west of Cambridge, England.

Rookery Farm, Crayke, North Yorkshire

Published: May 17, 2005    Last modified: May 22, 2022

Intrigued by the England and Wales Census 1881 record showing Daniel Jacklin 1862-1953 living in Crayke, North Yorkshire and going with my hunch that 'Rookery House' or 'Rookery Farm' might provide a clue, I Googled 'rookery house crayke'. I was amazed to find this in the 'Family Quest' section of 'The Dalesman' magazine:

EARNSHAW, request for information.

The information provided in this request matches the information from 1881 Census records. Though I have no evidence of any family link to the EARNSHAWs or WRIGHTs, it is still very satisfying to discover a few more tie-ins.

So why did the teenage Daniel Jacklin 1862-1953 move north from Orwell, Cambridgeshire and and find employment at Rookery Farm in North Yorkshire?

Notes:
In November 2004 we spent a few days in a holiday cottage on the edge of the North York Moors at Cropton near Pickering. Cropton is situated about 20 miles north-east of Crayke, and due to the fact I took the scenic route through the vale of York, we passed through many of the beautiful villages to be found in this region. This is a most beautiful part of England, agricultural and mainly undeveloped.

According to GENUKI, the Bulmer's Directory of 1890 records, under the trade of 'farmer', one John WRIGHT living at 'Rookery House', Crayke, North Yorkshire.

The England and Wales Census 1881 records John and Ellen WRIGHT living as in-laws with Richard and Ann EARNSHAW:

Is this the farm where Daniel JACKLIN 1862-1953 was living and working?

Coal Mining: South Yorkshire

Published: May 17, 2005    Last modified: May 22, 2022

Both my grandfather Wilfred JACKLIN 1896-1967 and great grandfather Daniel JACKLIN 1862-1953 worked the South Yorkshire coalfield. I am still trying to ascertain at which colliery or collieries they were employed, and for how long. There were several collieries in this area though transport would be an issue so presumably they would have worked reasonably close to home. This map courtesy of the Coal Mining Resource Centre details the South Yorkshire coalfield. Daniel JACKLIN (JACKLEN) aged 18 years appears on the England and Wales Census 1881, living and working as a labourer for Richard EARNSHAW on a farm of 62 acres at Crayke, North Yorkshire. By the time of the England and Wales Census 1891, Daniel (now age 28 years) has moved south to Bradley Yard, Aston-cum-Aughton, Rotherham, West Riding of Yorkshire, married Ziller ALLEN 1858-1949 at the Church of All Saints, Aston-cum-Aughton, and is now working as a coal miner.
