Certificates

In order to progress research of my ASHFORTH line I have ordered the following certificates from Sheffield Register Office:

William Henry ASHFORTH 1873-1926 - Birth Certificate
William Henry ASHFORTH 1851-1899 - Birth Certificate
William Henry ASHFORTH 1851-1899 and Ellen TOMLINSON 1855-1943 - Marriage Certificate

I am hoping these certificates will reveal a few clues regarding parentage.

A search of the England and Wales Census 1861 for Ellen TOMLINSON 1855-1943 reveals a family headed by one William TOMLINSON and living at Sheffield:

FHJ Ref: 016
Census: England and Wales Census 1861
Place: Norton, Derbyshire, England
Household: William Tomlinson

SURNAMEFIRST NAME(S)RELSTATUSAGEOCCUPATIONWHERE BORNREMARKS

The age of Ellen TOMLINSON 1855-1943 is as expected so I think there is a strong possibilty this is the correct family. Intuition tells me that John NEWBOLD, recorded in the Census as a boarder age 71 years, could well be Ellen's grandfather and Ellen's maiden surname is probably Newbold.

Further searches reveal a marriage abt. June 1845 between one William TOMLINSON and one Rebecca NEWBOULD so for the time being I will assume my research is leading me down the correct line.

Newbold or Newbould? A few searches online reveal possible families using either spelling.

Notes:
Dronfield remains in Derbyshire, while Totley and Norton are now part of South Yorkshire.

Updates:
2007-12-23 In this article I discovered Ellen TOMLINSON 1855-1943's father was one Samuel TOMLINSON 1826-1854, so the information shown here needs further research.

2010-09-11 After considering data provided by KW I realise this household is most likely incorrect and I should be researching the family of Samuel TOMLINSON 1826-1854 and Rhoda RIDAL 1826-Deceased. To help other researchers I will leave the data intact.

Ellen Ashforth (née Ellen Tomlinson 1855-1943)

For some time now the name Leah ASHFORTH (née Leah WEBB 1816-1901) has been niggling away at my mind. Each time I chat with my mother regarding the ASHFORTH line, and I mention Ellen ASHFORTH (née Ellen TOMLINSON 1855-1943), my mother reminds me she thought her forename was Leah.

With this in mind and thinking we may be talking about different generations I decided to carry out some serious research. Several hours later I seem to have established a number of leads worth following.

Some time ago while searching online I came across the death of one Leah ASHFORTH aged 85 years in the district of Ecclesall Bierlow, Sheffield.

Leah ASHFORTH is not a terribly common name, on the one hand this limits the number of results but on the other hand Ashforth is often interchanged with Ashford, Ashcroft, sometimes Ashworth and possibly other connotations.

George ASHFORTH 1814-Deceased and Leah ASHFORTH (née Leah WEBB 1816-1901) first appear as a family in the England and Wales Census 1861:

FHJ Ref: 030
Census: England and Wales Census 1861
Place: Sheffield, Yorkshire, England
Household: George Ashforth

Almost certainly 'William H ASHFORTH' is my gg grandfather William Henry ASHFORTH 1851-1899. The other children have proved more difficult to research since these are the first individuals in my ASHFORTH line to be born outside of Sheffield.

Come the England and Wales Census 1871 and now only Leah and William Henry are listed:

FHJ Ref: 031
Census: England and Wales Census 1871
Place: Sheffield, Yorkshire, England
Household: Leah Ashforth

SURNAMEFIRST NAME(S)RELSTATUSSEXAGEOCCUPATIONWHERE BORNREMARKS

There is no record of Leah ASHFORTH in the England and Wales Census 1881 and 1891 but she reappears in the England and Wales Census 1901:

FHJ Ref: 032
Census: England and Wales Census 1901
Place: Sheffield, Yorkshire, England
Household: Leah Ashforth

Only to die shortly afterwards age 85 years abt. June 1901.

It would appear George ASHFORTH 1814-Deceased travelled around the Sheffield, Manchester and West Midland regions of England before possibly settling back at Sheffield, Yorkshire. I have established Leah ASHFORTH (née Leah WEBB 1816-1901) was born at Kingswinford, Staffordshire, England but despite all my research I am still missing Leah's maiden surname.

Updates:
2007-12-02 Once again I have spoken with my mother regarding Leah ASHFORTH. My mother definitely recalls Leah being around in her (my mother's) childhood, which means it cannot be the Leah of this article since she passed away in 1901. My mother recalls 'her' Leah being into her nineties before she passed away. I seem to be going round in circles on this one; who is this mysterious Leah ASHFORTH?

Rosa Ashforth 1874: Birth Certificate

Published: November 3, 2007    Last modified: October 14, 2017

Certificates

At long last I seem to have found a maiden surname for the spouse of William Henry ASHFORTH 1851-1899. I have received from Sheffield Register Office the birth certificate for Rosa ASHFORTH 1874-Deceased.

Rosa ASHFORTH 1874-Deceased was born on the 23rd of February, 1874 at 83 Duncombe Street, Nether Hallam, Sheffield, Yorkshire, England. Her father is William Henry ASHFORTH 1851-1899 and her mother Ellen TOMLINSON 1855-1943.

My notes show I have a baptism record for Rosa ASHFORTH 1874-Deceased:

Ashforth, Rosie (adult) (of 172 Cuthbert Bank Rd).
Baptised December 5, 1888, by AH Rhodes at St John the Baptist Church, Owlerton.
Parents name(s) are Helena; William (File-cutter).

Rosa ASHFORTH 1874-Deceased is recorded as an adult. It would appear both William Henry ASHFORTH 1873-1926 and Rosa ASHFORTH 1874-Deceased were born before their parents were married.

This probably explains why Rosa was nearly 15 years of age when she was baptised.

My notes show a marriage in 1876 for William Henry ASHFORTH 1851-1899 and Ellen TOMLINSON 1855-1943. I will submit a request to Sheffield Register Office for this marriage certificate.

Notes:
The Church of Saint John the Baptist, Owlerton, Sheffield, Yorkshire, England.

William H Ashforth and Ellen Pasley / William Bellamy and Emma Bradshaw: Marriage Certificates

Published: October 16, 2007    Last modified: May 22, 2022

2012-02-14-16-03-06-01

Today I posted a request to Sheffield Register Office for the Marriage Certificates of:

William Henry ASHFORTH 1851-1899 and Ellen PASLEY - abt 1867.

William BELLAMY 1824-Deceased and Emma BRADSHAW - abt 1846.

Once again I hope these certificates will provide a few clues which may help in my research.

Updates:
2007-10-18 It would appear that this time my research is incorrect. The Sheffield Register Office telephoned to say the marriage records show William Henry ASHFORTH 1851-1899 married Lucy Ellen LOCKWOOD and not Ellen PASLEY.

To read this update please click here.

2009-01-03 Further research shows Ellen ASHFORTH's maiden name to be TOMLINSON not PASLEY.

Alice Ward (née Alice Ashforth 1891-Deceased)

Alice Ward (née Alice Ashforth 1891-Deceased)

Finally after many months of 'going to' I actually did take some of the family photographs (mainly from the ASHFORTH line) back to my mother for identification. Over the next few weeks I will scan the originals and add them to my gallery.

My mother identified this photograph of my great grand aunt Alice WARD (née Alice ASHFORTH 1891-Deceased), daughter of William Henry ASHFORTH 1851-1899 and Ellen ASHFORTH (née Ellen TOMLINSON 1855-1943).

My records show Alice WARD (née Alice ASHFORTH 1891-Deceased) was born in the year 1891 at Cuthbert Bank Road, Sheffield, Yorkshire. She was baptised on the 7th of October, 1891, by D. Hughes at the Church of Saint John the Baptist, Owlerton, Sheffield. Her parents are named as Ellen and William. William's profession being that of a 'File Cutter'.

Updates:
2007-11-03 Further research shows that Ellen ASHFORTH's maiden name was in fact TOMLINSON not PASLEY. To read this update please click here.

3rd cousins

Published: August 2, 2007    Last modified: November 8, 2016

Two recent comments and an email from descendants of William Henry ASHFORTH 1851-1899 and Ellen ASHFORTH (née Ellen TOMLINSON 1855-1943) have aroused great excitement. From the details given I have calculated (or to be totally honest I have used the Relationship Calculator tool within PAF) the following:

SH (name withheld for privacy) and Ronald Neil JACKLIN are 3rd cousins. Their common ancestors are William Henry ASHFORTH 1851-1899 and Ellen ASHFORTH (née Ellen TOMLINSON 1855-1943)

LE (name withheld for privacy) and Ronald Neil JACKLIN are 3rd cousins. Their common ancestors are William Henry ASHFORTH 1851-1899 and Ellen ASHFORTH (née Ellen TOMLINSON 1855-1943)

I have replied to the given email addresses and hopefully this will lead to further discoveries for the ASHFORTH and RENWICK lines.

Updates:
2009-01-03 Further research shows Ellen ASHFORTH's maiden name to be TOMLINSON not PASLEY. I have amended this article to reflect this new research.

Clara Williamson (née Clara Ashforth 1895-1932)

Clara Williamson (née Clara Ashforth 1895-1932)

Clara Williamson (née Clara ASHFORTH 1895-1932) was my great great aunt, the youngest child of William Henry ASHFORTH 1851-1899 and Ellen ASHFORTH (née Ellen TOMLINSON 1855-1943).

On the reverse of this photograph written in ink is this citation:

"With love from Clara to William"

William Henry ASHFORTH 1851-1899, Clara's father, died about 4 years after her birth, so this is most likely a reference to either her brother (my great grandfather) William Henry ASHFORTH 1873-1926 or her nephew (my great uncle) William Henry ASHFORTH 1896-1916. Her nephew William Henry ASHFORTH 1896-1916 would have been only a year or two younger than Clara; he died in action at the Somme, France on the 10th of July 1916.

Written in pencil on the reverse of the photograph is a date, though only 'June 10.....' is legible.

Updates:
2012-01-27 In earlier research I recorded Ellen ASHFORTH (née Ellen PASLEY) to be the wife of William Henry ASHFORTH 1851-1899 when in fact later research showed it to be Ellen ASHFORTH (née Ellen TOMLINSON 1855-1943). I have edited this article to reflect the change.

Harry Renwick and Jessie Renwick (née Jessie Ashforth)

Like most families we have 'shoe boxes' and 'biscuit tins' stuffed full of old photographs. Sadly most of these photographs have never been catalogued and so the subject or place can no longer be identified. My mother is custodian of our family's collection, so borrowing a few at a time I am hoping to digitally scan as many as possible. Beginning with those which we can readily identify I hope to archive these to both digital and paper based media.

This is one such photograph. It depicts Harry RENWICK 1885-1959, his children, sister-in-law and mother-in-law. Since his wife Jessie RENWICK (née Jessie ASHFORTH 1887-1954), my great grand aunt, was alive and well is not in the photograph we can only assume she was probably behind the camera. This photograph was taken in the backyard of one of the hundreds of terraced houses on and around Burton Street, Sheffield. Harry RENWICK 1885-1959 and Jessie RENWICK (née Jessie ASHFORTH 1887-1954) and family lived at 41 Burton Street just above Burton Street School which I believe is now a community centre.

Fortunately my mother is blessed with a superb memory and can identify all those in the above photograph. After further research here is some additional information:

Frank RENWICK 1915-1949 - died of TB, aged about 23 years.
Harry RENWICK 1885-1959 - married Jessie ASHFORTH 1887-1954
Ethel ASHFORTH 1889-Deceased - suffered from epilepsy and was eventually admitted to Middlewood Hospital, Sheffield where she remained until her death.
Ellen ASHFORTH (née Ellen TOMLINSON 1855-1943) - my great grandmother, lived into her nineties.
Ernest RENWICK 1918-Deceased
Clara RENWICK 1912-Deceased - married John BARBER Deceased.
Robert RENWICK Deceased - died of Tuberculosis, aged about 23 years.
Jessie RENWICK 1908-1982 - emigrated to New Zealand and married Henry James WILLIAMSON 1894-1965.

Updates:
2007-08-02 Thanks must go to SH for leaving the comments re: RENWICKS / ASHFORTHS.

"The pictures you have of the wedding party are my great grand parents Harry RENWICK 1885-1959 and Jessie RENWICK (née Jessie ASHFORTH 1887-1954). I was born at 41 Burton Street, we have photos of Clara (my grandmother) and she did not emigrate to New Zealand but her sister Jessie did." - SH

"Harry RENWICK 1885-1959 is my great grandfather, Clara RENWICK 1912- is my grand mother who married John BARBER, my mothers name was Joan BARBER and she had a sister called Rene and a brother called Jack. Ernest RENWICK 1918- was my uncle, my sister and I visit the ASHFORTH and RENWICK graves at Wardsend Cemetery. We have several family photos of all these people and also Frank and Bob. I was born at 41 Burton Street where we used to live with my great grandparents, sadly my grandparents and my own parents are deceased, I would love to hear from anyone who knows of our family." - SH

I have amended some of the details and hope this time to have correctly identified everyone.

2007-09-09 I am still rather confused over the boys' names in this photograph. Subsequent research leads me to question my previous research. To read a later post outlining this issue click here.

2008-12-30 Further research shows Ellen ASHFORTH's maiden name to be TOMLINSON not PASLEY so I have amended this article.
