Coprolite

Published: January 16, 2006    Last modified: November 28, 2016

I'm not sure how I came by this link about Coprolite or why it has taken such a long time to find, but since it pertains to Coprolite and the village of Bassingbourn, Cambridgeshire, I thought I should record it here. My line of JACKLIN's originate from this area; the England and Wales Census 1871 records my great great grandfather Daniel JACKLIN 1842-1897's occupation as 'Coprolite labourer'.

Wikipedia also has an entry for Coprolite.

Joseph Bellamy and Mary Ann Turner

Published: December 16, 2005    Last modified: November 5, 2016

Realising I have been researching the wrong line of BELLAMY, and having taken a fresh look at my notes, I decided to spend time researching Mary Ann BELLAMY (née Mary Ann TURNER 1861-Deceased), Joseph BELLAMY 1857-Deceased's wife.

My notes show I had already established a marriage in 1879 between one Joseph BELLAMY 1857-Deceased and one Mary Ann BELLAMY (née Mary Ann TURNER 1861-Deceased), and I have no reason to doubt the cogency of this.

A search of FreeBMD shows a birth for a Mary Ann BELLAMY (née Mary Ann TURNER 1861-Deceased) in September 1861. This corresponds with the census information. Unfortunately, at the time of writing, the FreeBMD database holds very few records of birth for the year 1857. This could be why after many hours searching, trying variations of spelling and several districts I have yet to find a record of birth for Joseph BELLAMY 1857-Deceased.

A search of the 1871 British Census reveals this household:

Likewise a search for BELLAMY households returns the following:

The date of birth for Joseph BELLAMY 1857-Deceased also concurs with my findings.

Not wishing to make the same mistake twice, and since I had planned to visit Sheffield today, I called at the register office and ordered the following certificates:

Marriage Certificate: Joseph BELLAMY 1857-Deceased and Mary Ann BELLAMY (née Mary Ann TURNER 1861-Deceased)

Birth Certificate: Joseph BELLAMY 1857-Deceased

Birth Certificate: Mary Ann BELLAMY (née Mary Ann TURNER 1861-Deceased)

These should be available in a few days time and hopefully will confirm the results of my research.

Thomas Rosewarne 1823-1895 and Emily Rosewarne 1832-Deceased: Census 1871: Transcription

Published: November 29, 2005    Last modified: November 14, 2016

My transcription of the England and Wales Census 1871 for the household of one Thomas ROSEWARNE 1823-1895 reveals the younger Emily ROSEWARNE 1865-1944 age 6 years.

FHJ Ref: 027
Census: England and Wales Census 1871
Place: 115 King Street, Sheffield, Yorkshire, England
Household: Thomas Rosewarne

Despite many hours research I am still to find a marriage for Thomas ROSEWARNE 1823-1895 and Emily ROSEWARNE and therefore unable to provide a maiden name for Emily, the wife of Thomas.

I recall my mother saying there are additional children to document over and above those recorded in the Census return.

Notes:
King Street is still shown on the current map of Sheffield though I doubt this is the same King Street referred to in this census return.

Updates:
2012-02-07 The probable reason for being unable to find a record of marriage between Thomas ROSEWARNE 1823-1895 and Emily GREAVES 1832-Deceased is that of not using a wild card in my searches. Rose* would have found a marriage between one Thomas ROSEWARD and one Emily GREAVES 1832-Deceased. Live and learn.

The Coprolite Industry

Published: May 20, 2005    Last modified: November 28, 2016

The England and Wales Census 1871 records the occupation of my gg grandfather Daniel JACKLIN 1842-1897 as 'coprolite labourer'. During this period of the 19th century the Coprolite industry provided plenty of work for the villages such as Orwell and Whaddon, south-west of Cambridge, England.
