Coprolite

I'm not sure how I came by this link about Coprolite or why it has taken such a long time to find, but since it pertains to Coprolite and the village of Bassingbourn, Cambridgeshire, I thought I should record it here. My line of JACKLIN's originate from this area; the England and Wales Census 1871 records my great great grandfather Daniel JACKLIN 1842-1897's occupation as 'Coprolite labourer'.

Wikipedia also has an entry for Coprolite.

2016-11-28 Another very good article about Coprolite: The Coprolite Industry in Meldreth. Meldreth is just a few miles from Orwell and Whaddon where my JACKLIN and PEARCE lines originate.

John Allen and Elizabeth Bird

Ever since I started researching my family history I have been frustrated by the apparent lack of information available for my great great grandfather John ALLEN 1831-Deceased.

I know he lived at Little Gringley, Nottinghamshire, but there were many branches of the ALLEN family in and around the parish of Clarborough, Nottinghamshire and it has been difficult to associate the various individuals with the various households.

Well thanks to a very kind lady from the USA with whom I may share a common ancestor, many of these quandaries have been resolved. I now have a father, mother and siblings for John ALLEN 1831-Deceased the father of my great grandmother Ziller JACKLIN (née Ziller ALLEN 1858-1949).

John ALLEN abt.1789-Deceased born about 1789 and Elizabeth ALLEN (née Elizabeth BIRD 1796-Deceased) born 17th January 1796 married on the 28th November 1816.
John and Elizabeth raised 9 children (there may have been others that died in childhood) and I will list them in chronological order:

Gervase ALLEN, born 1817
Mary ALLEN, born 1818
George ALLEN, born 1823
William ALLEN, born 1824
John ALLEN, born abt. 1827
Harriet ALLEN, born 1828
Vincent ALLEN, born 1833
Jane ALLEN, born 1834
Hannah ALLEN, born 1837

I have a slight discrepancy with the date of birth for John ALLEN (son) but I'm sure a little more research will resolve this.

This lady has a great deal of information regarding the ALLENs who emigrated to the USA in the latter half of the 19th century and I will eventually document and comment on some of these branches.

Updates:
2007-01-30 Having met with Juanita Lewis (the lady I mention) and compared research, Juanita believes we have two distict lines of ALLEN families and two John ALLENs. I am inclined to agree and desperately need to obtain further documentation.

Last week in this post I wrote about finding a descendant of John Robert MAPLETHORPE 1851-Deceased and Rebecca MAPLETHORPE (née Rebecca FORD 1855-1883), well this person whom for privacy I will refer to as PH, the gg grandaughter of Sarah Elizabeth SMITH (née Sarah Elizabeth MAPLETHORPE 1876-1962) has very kindly provided me with many interesting details for this line of the family.

My original research linking my grandmother Ivy JACKLIN (née Ivy DIXON 1901-1983) with Mary Maria DIXON / Mary Maria CARTER (née Mary Maria MAPLETHORPE 1878-1964), John Robert MAPLETHORPE 1851-Deceased (sometimes cited as John W MAPLETHORPE) and Rebecca MAPLETHORPE (née Rebecca FORD 1855-1883) proved to be correct. I have now established various dates and places though it will take sometime to collate all this information and update this site accordingly.

Littleborough Lane, Marton, Lincolnshire

Church of Saint Margaret of Antioch, Marton, Lincolnshire

Many of my paternal grandmother Ivy JACKLIN (née Ivy DIXON 1901-1983)'s ancestors lived in this region of Lincolnshire, and during their lifetimes, many lived at Marton, a small village close to the River Trent. In this region the River Trent forms a natural county boundary between Lincolnshire and Nottinghamshire.

Littleborough Lane, Marton, Lincolnshire forms part of a Roman road which runs from Lincoln to Littleborough, Nottinghamshire, crossing the River Trent just west of Marton. In Roman Britain this would have been a major strategic crossing point and archaeological investigation has revealed the existence of a fort, presumably built to guard the crossing.

Joseph Carter 1877-1959 and Mary Maria Maplethorpe 1878-1964

It is quite some time since I used FreeBMD and I surmise additional 20th century data has been transcribed, since while searching for Mary Maria MAPLETHORPE 1878-1964 I came across a marriage to 'CARTER'. The later marriage returns (I think, post 1912) list the name of the spouse, though only the surname.

FreeBMD returns a marriage for Mary Maria MAPLETHORPE 1878-1964 to Samuel DIXON 1869-1906 in September 1897 though her name appears as Mary Maria MABLETHOPE. FreeBMD returns a second marriage in June 1913, this time the spouse is shown as 'CARTER'. At this moment in time I have no information regarding when or why her first marriage to Samuel DIXON 1869-1906 ceased.

I know my grandmother Ivy JACKLIN (née Ivy DIXON 1901-1983) and Kathleen LOCK (née Kathleen CARTER 1917-Deceased) were step-sisters but sometimes names in families can be very misleading. My relatives from Marton, Lincolnshire always referred to Ivy DIXON 1901-1983 as 'Granny Carter' and it is only recently as I delved into her family history that have I learned of Samuel DIXON 1869-1906, her biological father.

My family is in possession of Mary Maria's death certificate in which she is described as the widow of Joseph CARTER. So this gives a forename to 'Carter'. Further searches on FreeBMD returns a birth for one Joseph CARTER in March 1877. This birth was registered in the Gainsborough district. This fits my expectations so I will consider it correct it until proved otherwise.

Just to throw a little spanner into the works, Ivy DIXON 1901-1983's marriage certificate records George DIXON as being her father, not Samuel DIXON 1869-1906 as I would have expected. This needs further research.

Since I wrote this I have spoken with one of my relatives at Marton, Lincolnshire and I now have my doubts about this Joseph CARTER.

Jesse Butroid 1862-1943 and Sarah Allen 1862-1943: Family tree updated

I finally made time to update the family tree of my great grand aunt Sarah ALLEN 1862-1943 sister of my great grandmother Ziller JACKLIN (née Ziller ALLEN 1858-1949) and both born at Little Gringley, Nottinghamshire. I am indebted to a direct descendant (actually my 3rd cousin 1 time removed) of Sarah BUTROID (née Sarah ALLEN 1862-1943) and Jesse BUTROID 1862-1943 for providing me with the details of their marriage. I wrote about this in an earlier article. I have updated my GEDCOM to reflect the new details.

This update adds the following descendants: Fanny MARSH 1891-1972, Elsie BUTROYD 1914-1985 and George Leslie GRANTHAM 1911-1955. Other descendants are still alive.

Dixon, Butroid and Seaton: Fillingham, Lincolnshire

While searching the surname DIXON online (my paternal grandmother's maiden name), I came across one Sarah DIXON. A reference to the village of Fillingham, Lincolnshire caught my eye.

As a very young child I remember staying for a few days at my uncle Harold's farm at Fillingham, and being from inner city Sheffield, farm animals, tractors and haystacks were an adventure playground.

I'm sure my uncle Harold was Harold CARTER 1913-1977, though I really know so little about this branch (paternal) of the family.

Anyway, while browsing the links on this site I then came across a reference to John BUTROID 1840-1921 and this lead to SEATON and BUTROID and eventually BUTROID.

Now the reason I mention this is because in previous posts I documented the link between my great grandmother Ziller ALLEN 1858-1949's sister Sarah ALLEN 1862-1943 and https://familyhistoryjournal.com/genealogy/getperson.php?personID=I56&tree=tree1.

Time and research will tell if the name Sarah DIXON is of any significance.

The 'Ancestors of John Heaton Gray' website has not been updated for a few years but maybe the email address is still valid.

In this post about High Hazels Park, Sheffield - revisited I mentioned I have a photograph of High Hazel Shelter - Members Outing - 1936.

Well, in response to a request for this photograph, I finally made time to make a scan and add it to the Gallery.

In my family there is some debate as to which of these gentleman is my grandfather Wilfred JACKLIN 1896-1967. Having examined an enlarged copy of the scanned image I can clearly identify him as being the person, 3rd row from the front, 5th from the left.

Can anyone now provide the destination of the members outing?

In March of this year during a few days staying at Barton Mills, Suffolk we made a fleeting visit to Wimpole Hall, Wimpole, Cambridgeshire.

Standing within the grounds of Wimpole Hall is the Parish Church of Saint Andrew, which though being very close to the hall, is totally independent of both Wimpole Hall and the National Trust which administers the Hall.

The www.wimpole.info web site provides a valuable archive of Wimpole, Orwell and nearby villages.

This site provides a transcript of www.wimpole.info/marriages_1800.htm "The Registers for the Parish of Wimpole, Cambridgeshire" and contains several references to JACKLIN.

This extract shows a reference to a Daniel JACKLIN being a witness to the marriage of Stephen JACKLIN and Jane WHITBY.

I thought this might be my gg grandfather Daniel JACKLIN 1842-1897. He would have been 16 years old in 1858; too young to be a marriage witness?

More likely this was Daniel JACKLIN who eventually married Elizabeth WRIGHT at Bassingbourn on 18th April 1863.

Both were descendants of James JACKLIN 1767-1836 and Ann HOWES 1775-1851.

Daniel Jacklen (Jacklin): Census 1881: Crayke, North Yorkshire

The weather on Saturday was obviously going to be hot and sunny so we quickly changed plans and decided to visit Newby Hall and Gardens, near Ripon, North Yorkshire.

Later in the afternoon and wondering what to do next we decided to eat at a pub restaurant somewhere along our route home. We had a couple of hours to spare before the pubs opened and realising Crayke could not be far from our current location I set our recently acquired 'satnav' to guide us to the village of Crayke. Negotiating all the minor roads around North Yorkshire is usually a nightmare but the 'satnav' proved its worth and 30 minutes later we were standing in the grounds the Church of Saint Cuthbert, Crayke.

The England and Wales Census 1881 records Daniel JACKLEN (Daniel JACKLIN 1862-1953) living and working at Rookery House, Crayke. I have little idea how or why Daniel came to be at Crayke.

Notes:
Since I had not planned to visit Crayke, I found myself in the somewhat frustrating position of being able to recall the name of the property (Rookery House) but not its location, other than it being on the outskirts of the village. Normally I have some digital Ordnance Survey maps stored on my PDA but on this occasion not the one I required. Only later did I realise that I had twice driven past the end of the lane which leads to Rookery House. In retrospect I suppose I should have asked one of the local villagers.
