Coal Mining: South Yorkshire

Published: May 17, 2005    Last modified: May 22, 2022

Both my grandfather Wilfred JACKLIN 1896-1967 and great grandfather Daniel JACKLIN 1862-1953 worked the South Yorkshire coalfield. I am still trying to ascertain at which colliery or collieries they were employed, and for how long. There were several collieries in this area though transport would be an issue so presumably they would have worked reasonably close to home. This map courtesy of the Coal Mining Resource Centre details the South Yorkshire coalfield. Daniel JACKLIN (JACKLEN) aged 18 years appears on the England and Wales Census 1881, living and working as a labourer for Richard EARNSHAW on a farm of 62 acres at Crayke, North Yorkshire. By the time of the England and Wales Census 1891, Daniel (now age 28 years) has moved south to Bradley Yard, Aston-cum-Aughton, Rotherham, West Riding of Yorkshire, married Ziller ALLEN 1858-1949 at the Church of All Saints, Aston-cum-Aughton, and is now working as a coal miner.

Could Vincent ALLEN be John ALLEN's younger brother?

Elizabeth Allen

I am aware of Ziller (Zillah) ALLEN living in the household of George SMITHSON at East Drayton, Nottinghamshire but when I carried out a search for ALLEN on the England and Wales Census 1881 I also found an entry for an Elizabeth ALLEN in this household.

I browsed through the England and Wales Census 1881 entries for Little Gringley, Nottinghamshire. A surprising number of dwellings are recorded, certainly more than my recent visit suggested. I was primarily searching for ALLEN and found the following:

I wonder if it is safe to assume that Vincent ALLEN is a brother to John ALLEN?

The 1841 census has both John and Vincent in the same household of John and Elizabeth Allen at Little Gringley.

The England and Wales Census 1881 records an Elizabeth ALLEN at Little Gringley, Nottinghamshire. I feel sure this must be Ziller JACKLIN (née Ziller ALLEN 1858-1949). My father recalls he knew his grandmother as Ziller but just to add to the confusion, her marriage certificate records the name Zellaby.

I think I need to obtain a copy of Ziller's birth certificate in order to clarify both her name at birth and her place of birth.

Updates:
2007-08-31 I later discovered Elizabeth ALLEN 1861-Deceased was a younger sister of Ziller JACKLIN (née Ziller ALLEN 1858-1949). The England and Wales Census 1881 records Ziller (Zillah) now living with the George SMITHSON 1830-Deceased household at East Drayton, Nottinghamshire.

George Bellamy: England and Wales Census 1881 and 1891

I have a George BELLAMY in my GEDCOM file recorded as George Albert BELLAMY 1880-Deceased. This record from the England and Wales Census 1881 records a George BELLAMY being 4 years old. This matches my estimations but I will need to cross check.

The 1891 Briitish Census no longer records Sarah Ann BELLAMY , Blanche BELLAMY and Ada BELLAMY. I notice a very slight change in the address; so did they move or is this just a mistake.

Harriet FLOWERS (née Harriet LAW) 1837-1903 was a maternal gg grandmother. Married to George FLOWERS 1839-1891, but as I have already discovered, George was languishing in Sheffield General Infirmary at the time of the England and Wales Census 1881.

This record from the England and Wales Census 1881 solves the mystery of my gg grandfather George FLOWERS 1839-1891 not being shown as head of the household. The poor fellow was languishing in Sheffield General Infirmary. I can now approximate his date of birth to circa 1840.

Ziller Jacklin (née Ziller Allen 1859-1949): Census: East Drayton

Published: April 5, 2005    Last modified: November 14, 2016

Searching the England and Wales Census 1881 I discovered Ziller JACKLIN (née Ziller ALLEN) 1858-1949, my paternal great grandmother, appears to have had an older sister Jane ALLEN 1853-, both were born at Little Gringley, Nottinghamshire.

I surmise Jane ALLEN 1853- married George SMITHSON 1830- of East Drayton, East Retford, Nottinghamshire since the 1881 British Census records Ziller ALLEN 1858-1949 living (as sister-in-law) at East Drayton in the household of George SMITHSON 1830-:

These records suggest Jane SMITHSON (née Jane ALLEN 1853-) had 2 children, either from a previous marriage or 'out of wedlock'. I will need to conduct further research.
