Elizabeth 'Betty' Allen: Intrigue

Recently I was discussing with my mother the news regarding Harriet BARLOW (née Harriet ALLEN 1877-1958) and Mary BACON (née Mary ALLEN 1871-1951). We were chatting about Daniel JACKLIN 1862-1953 and Ziller JACKLIN (née Ziller ALLEN 1858-1949) and if they ever had visits from other members of the family (Daniel and Ziller moved from Bradley Yard, Swallownest, Yorkshire and lived the rest of their lives at Langley Street, Darnall, Sheffield, Yorkshire). My mother happened to mention that they brought up a young girl known by the name of Betty, and Betty would occasionally visit. Immediately I recalled the census record shown below which records Elizabeth aged 9 and described as a niece; undoubtedly this is Betty.

My mother went on to say how in November 1949, Betty attended Ziller's funeral, but my mother could not remember any details regarding her family background.

Was Elizabeth really a niece or maybe a child from another relationship? The mystery and intrigue continues.

2008-09-22 This weekend I spoke with my aunt and she understands that after Betty's father died Betty was 'adopted' by Daniel JACKLIN 1862-1953 and Ziller JACKLIN (née Ziller ALLEN 1858-1949). Apparently her mother was already dead. On getting married Betty moved to Bury, Lancashire.

Harriet Allen 1877-1958 and Henry Barlow 1870-1959

While I was busy replying to the contributor of my previous post I was contacted by a grandson of Harriet BARLOW (née Harriet ALLEN 1877-1958), another sister of my great grandmother Ziller JACKLIN (née Ziller ALLEN 1858-1949). He has provided me with a great deal of information regarding the descendants of Harriet BARLOW (née Harriet ALLEN 1877-1958) together with permission to publish this photograph of Harriet taken about 1918.

I have added the information to my GEDCOM which greatly extends my family tree along yet another branch.

Here are a few brief details of Harriet and Henry:

Harriet ALLEN 1877-1958 was born at Little Gringley, Clarborough, Nottinghamshire in 1887 and married Henry BARLOW 1870-1959 on the 23rd July 1903 at the Registry Office in Worksop, Nottinghamshire. Henry BARLOW 1870-1959 was born at Askham, Nottinghamshire in 1870. Henry and Harriet had six children, Harriet died on the 30th January 1958 at Shirebrook, Derbyshire and Henry died March 1959 also at Shirebrook, Derbyshire. They are buried at Shirebrook Cemetery, Shirebrook, Derbyshire.

Notes:
Harriet BARLOW (née Harriet ALLEN 1877-1958) gave birth to a son, Albert ALLEN 1898-1918 (England and Wales Census 1901 - born 1898 in Elkesley, Nottinghamshire) but did not marry Henry BARLOW 1870-1959 until 23 July 1903. Army records describe Albert as Albert Allen BARLOW, so it appears that he took the BARLOW family name after the marriage. Mary Allen 1871-1951 and George Bacon 1878-1944

A few weeks ago, through this website, a grand daughter of Mary ALLEN 1871-1951 (Mary is sometimes shown as Sally ALLEN) contacted me regarding Mary ALLEN 1871-1951 and George BACON 1878-1944. This was wonderful news and has solved a few of the mysteries surrounding this branch of the family.

Mary ALLEN 1871-1951 was a sister of my great grandmother Ziller JACKLIN (née Ziller ALLEN 1858-1949) and is one of the sisters about whom I had little useful information.

The research is very interesting, so with permission, I have published it here:

"I have been researching my tree for several years but couldn't find anything on my grandmother as there seemed to be two Mary's registered for that year but neither appeared on the 1881 census. I did find a Mary on the 1891 census living with the Hopkinson family at Mill House Farm, Hodsock, Nottinghamshire. This gave her place of birth as Little Gringley, Nottinghamshire.

I then sent for her marriage certificate and this gave her father's name as John Allen - gardener. One of the witnesses was Elizabeth Stockdale. I checked the 1891 census and found the Allen's neighbours were Benjamin and Elizabeth Stockdale. The 1901 census showed the Allen's living in Grove, Nottinghamshire and John as being a garden labourer. I already knew that she gave birth to a son just prior to her marriage, the place of birth being given as Grove, Nottinghamshire. I also discovered that Elizabeth Stockdale's maiden name was Allen but I think she was probably a cousin and not her sister.

Then I took a good look at the 1881 census again and I believe the name given as Sally is actually Polly and I am assured by several people that this was a common nickname for Mary. However this didn't solve the problem of the two Mary's so I sent for both birth certificates - one was the Mary above and the other was born to Elizabeth Allen of Moorgate, Clarborough, Nottinghamshire and no father's name given. This child was born in August 1871 and there is a recorded death of a Mary Allen in September 1871 (aged 0 years) so could be the same person.

My grandmother married George Bacon on October 29th 1894 at Ordsall Parish Church and lived the rest of her life in Everton where George was born and brought up." - Courtesy the family of Mary Allen.

I am extremely grateful to this descendant of Mary ALLEN 1871-1951 for sharing her research and hopefully other descendants of the ALLEN line may see these pages and make contact.

Notes:
I was aware of Elizabeth ALLEN 1865-1946 marrying Ben STOCKDALE, but have few other details than those from the England and Wales Census 1891.

As a child whenever we drove through Everton my father would say "this is where my Aunt lives". Since his father Wilfred JACKLIN 1896-1967 had no siblings then perhaps he meant his Great Aunt. Could this have been Mary ALLEN 1871-1951?

William Butroid and Rebecca Butroid (née Rebecca Bowering): Church of All Saints, Misterton, Nottinghamshire

After walking part of the Chesterfield Canal from West Stockwith towards Gringley-on-the-Hill we decided to return by way of the north Nottinghamshire village of Misterton. This gave me the opportunity to take some photographs of the Church of All Saints, Misterton and check the headstones for family names. This graveyard is immaculately kept and congratulations must go to the person or persons responsible.

By sheer chance the first headstone I checked (shown in the photograph above) was that of one William BUTROID and his wife Rebecca BUTROID (née Rebecca BOWERING).

My great grandmother Ziller JACKLIN (née Ziller ALLEN 1858-1949) had a sister Sarah BUTROID (née Sarah ALLEN 1862-1943) who married Jesse BUTROID 1862-1943. Jesse was born at West Butterwick and Jesse's father John BUTROID 1840-1921, was born at East Stockwith, just across the River Trent from West Stockwith and Misterton.

At this moment in time I am not sure where William and Rebecca BUTROID fit into the family tree, but as far as I am aware this is the only connection the JACKLIN line has with Misterton.

Unusually in these times of theft and vandalism the church was open and I was able to take a few photographs of the interior together with a couple of the stained glass windows. As usual the exterior proved more of a problem, strong sunlight prohibited some angles and 'street furniture' proved invasive on others.

John Allen and David Allen

Little Gringley, Clarborough, Nottinghamshire

A couple of weeks ago I received an email via the feedback form on my jacklin.info website.

"My name’s John and I’ve just discovered we share the same great-great-grandfather (John Allen, b Little Gringley c1830)."

"I see your line develops through Zillah Allen, whereas mine comes from her younger brother David (b 1867), my great grandfather. The tree I saw had no other details of him so I will be happy to fill you in."

This is very exciting news.

As Juanita Lewis indicated at our meeting in 2006, and John has confirmed in a subsequent email, there appears to have been, at this time, two John ALLENs living at Little Gringley.

John ALLEN 1827-Deceased (christened 13/4/1827) to parents John ALLEN abt. 1879-Deceased) and Elizabeth ALLEN (née Elizabeth BIRD 1796-Deceased)

John ALLEN 1831-Deceased (christened 15/4/1831) to parents Thomas abt. 1799-1876 and Elizabeth ALLEN (née Elizabeth DEWICK d.1860).

Not suprisingly this has lead to some confusion. Hopefully, now I know which line to research, I can make some progress with my great great grandfather John ALLEN 1831-Deceased.

This news has enabled me to add additional information to my GEDCOM regarding David ALLEN 1867-1902, one of Ziller JACKLIN (née Ziller ALLEN 1858-1949)'s brothers.

John Allen and Elizabeth Bird

Ever since I started researching my family history I have been frustrated by the apparent lack of information available for my great great grandfather John ALLEN 1831-Deceased.

I know he lived at Little Gringley, Nottinghamshire, but there were many branches of the ALLEN family in and around the parish of Clarborough, Nottinghamshire and it has been difficult to associate the various individuals with the various households.

Well thanks to a very kind lady from the USA with whom I may share a common ancestor, many of these quandaries have been resolved. I now have a father, mother and siblings for John ALLEN 1831-Deceased the father of my great grandmother Ziller JACKLIN (née Ziller ALLEN 1858-1949).

John ALLEN abt.1789-Deceased born about 1789 and Elizabeth ALLEN (née Elizabeth BIRD 1796-Deceased) born 17th January 1796 married on the 28th November 1816.
John and Elizabeth raised 9 children (there may have been others that died in childhood) and I will list them in chronological order:

Gervase ALLEN, born 1817
Mary ALLEN, born 1818
George ALLEN, born 1823
William ALLEN, born 1824
John ALLEN, born abt. 1827
Harriet ALLEN, born 1828
Vincent ALLEN, born 1833
Jane ALLEN, born 1834
Hannah ALLEN, born 1837

I have a slight discrepancy with the date of birth for John ALLEN (son) but I'm sure a little more research will resolve this.

This lady has a great deal of information regarding the ALLENs who emigrated to the USA in the latter half of the 19th century and I will eventually document and comment on some of these branches.

Updates:
2007-01-30 Having met with Juanita Lewis (the lady I mention) and compared research, Juanita believes we have two distict lines of ALLEN families and two John ALLENs. I am inclined to agree and desperately need to obtain further documentation.

Frederick Thomas Cutts abt. 1885-Deceased and Hannah Allen abt. 1856-Deceased

Earlier this year I wrote about coming upon Hannah CUTTS (née Hannah ALLEN abt. 1856-Deceased) and Frederick CUTTS abt.1885-Deceased living at Treeton, Rotherham, Yorkshire. To read this article please click here.

My great grandparents Daniel JACKLIN 1862-1953 and Ziller JACKLIN (née Ziller ALLEN 1858-1949) lived close by at Aston-cum-Aughton. I presume all had relocated to this area to take up employment with local coal mining companies.

A few searches of the England and Wales Census 1901 show the family still living in this mining community. My transcription from the Census is as follows:

A major criticism of the 1901 Census is the poor quality of transcription: I must agree.

Lily is no longer listed though an additional son Ernest is now shown. Is Elizabeth now 'Letty'? If so her age does not equate with that recorded in the England & Wales Census 1891. Curious.

Jesse Butroid 1862-1943 and Sarah Allen 1862-1943: Family tree updated

I finally made time to update the family tree of my great grand aunt Sarah ALLEN 1862-1943 sister of my great grandmother Ziller JACKLIN (née Ziller ALLEN 1858-1949) and both born at Little Gringley, Nottinghamshire. I am indebted to a direct descendant (actually my 3rd cousin 1 time removed) of Sarah BUTROID (née Sarah ALLEN 1862-1943) and Jesse BUTROID 1862-1943 for providing me with the details of their marriage. I wrote about this in an earlier article. I have updated my GEDCOM to reflect the new details.

This update adds the following descendants: Fanny MARSH 1891-1972, Elsie BUTROYD 1914-1985 and George Leslie GRANTHAM 1911-1955. Other descendants are still alive.

Zillah Fenton: Search

Late last night while mulling over how to proceed with my research into John ALLEN 1831-Deceased and Fanny LITTLEWOOD 1832-1915 I noticed Joseph LITTLEWOOD 1811-Deceased and Zillah FENTON 1811-Deceased in my family tree but I had marked it 'tentative'.

I have always had a certain amount of success searching on either 'Little Gringley' or the various forms of the forename 'Ziller' my great grandmother Ziller ALLEN 1858-1949 used. I searched for 'Zillah Fenton' and surprisingly it returned just this one result from NOTTSGEN-L Archives.

Though this post is from a 2001 archive I emailed the contact address and was pleasantly surpised when shortly afterwards I received a reply.

Being rather late I abandoned further research but I'm rather excited by this latest discovery.

Dixon, Butroid and Seaton: Fillingham, Lincolnshire

While searching the surname DIXON online (my paternal grandmother's maiden name), I came across one Sarah DIXON. A reference to the village of Fillingham, Lincolnshire caught my eye.

As a very young child I remember staying for a few days at my uncle Harold's farm at Fillingham, and being from inner city Sheffield, farm animals, tractors and haystacks were an adventure playground.

I'm sure my uncle Harold was Harold CARTER 1913-1977, though I really know so little about this branch (paternal) of the family.

Anyway, while browsing the links on this site I then came across a reference to John BUTROID 1840-1921 and this lead to SEATON and BUTROID and eventually BUTROID.

Now the reason I mention this is because in previous posts I documented the link between my great grandmother Ziller ALLEN 1858-1949's sister Sarah ALLEN 1862-1943 and https://familyhistoryjournal.com/genealogy/getperson.php?personID=I56&tree=tree1.

Time and research will tell if the name Sarah DIXON is of any significance.

The 'Ancestors of John Heaton Gray' website has not been updated for a few years but maybe the email address is still valid.
