George Hill and Fanny Allen

Published: June 5, 2005    Last modified: November 11, 2016

Following on from my research of Sarah ALLEN, I turned my attention to Fanny ALLEN, another daughter of John ALLEN and Fanny ALLEN (née Fanny LITTLEWOOD). A search of FreeBMD returned a marriage in 1886 for one Fanny ALLEN and one George HILL. Unfortunately this date is too late for the England and Wales Census 1881. So using FreeCEN, I performed a search for George HILL on the England and Wales Census 1891. This found a record for the household of George HILL at Wilson's Yard, Saxilby, Lincolnshire, England. The birth place of Fanny HILL (née Fanny ALLEN) the wife of George HILL is recorded as Little Gringley, Nottinghamshire: Walter HILL the eldest son is also recorded as being born at Little Gringley, Nottinghamshire.

I think it is safe to assume that I have the correct Fanny HILL (née Fanny ALLEN) together with her husband George HILL. I can now add a few details for another of the ALLEN sisters.

Elizabeth Allen 1861-Deceased

Looking back though some of my old posts I realise this post regarding my great grandmother Ziller JACKLIN (née Ziller ALLEN) was a little precipitant. Probably due to the fact that I had taken a 2 year hiatus from family history research, I had forgotten the family is in possesion of a birth and a marriage certificate for Ziller ALLEN 1859-1949. Of course as soon as I got to see the certificates I realised Elizabeth ALLEN is probably a sibling. I now need to follow some of the leads in the notes I attached to her GEDCOM entry.

Vincent Allen and Millicent Allen (née Millicent Morley)

Could Vincent ALLEN be John ALLEN's younger brother?

Sarah Allen

While researching my previous 2 posts re: Zillah ALLEN, I came across this record (which as it turns out, I already have) from the England and Wales Census 1891. It records Daniel JACKLIN 1862-1953 and Ziller JACKLIN (née ALLEN) 1858-1949 living at Aston-cum-Aughton so I decided to browse through some of the other households in the same area with a hunch that other members of the family may have relocated to the same area in order to find work in the coal mines. I eventually found this entry:

FHJ Ref: 013
Census: England and Wales Census 1891

According to this entry Sarah BUTROID was born in Little Gringley, Nottinghamshire, England. Intuition told me that this could well be Sarah BUTROID (née Sarah ALLEN).

An online search eventually produced the result I had expected:

Marriages in the district of East Retford for the period Dec 1884: Jesse BUTROID married Sarah ALLEN.

The dates are what I would expect. My only concern now is that some of the children I have linked to John ALLEN 1831- of Little Gringley, Nottinghamshire, England are still based on conjecture.

Frederick Cutts and Hannah Cutts (neé Hannah Allen)

I found a reference to Little Gringley, Nottinghamshire, England on Treetonweb1891 Census. This page records an entry transcribed from the England and Wales Census 1891 for the CUTTS household in Treeton, Rotherham, Yorkshire, England and lists:

FHJ Ref: 011
Census: England and Wales Census 1891
Place: 19 Mill Lane, Treeton, Rotherham, Yorkshire, England

Little Gringley being the birthplace of Hannah CUTTS (neé Hannah ALLEN) and with Little Gringley being a sparsely populated hamlet, this could well be a clue worth saving for research into the ALLEN family. The village of Treeton is only a few miles from Aston-cum-Aughton and Swallownest where Daniel JACKLIN and Ziller JACKLIN (née ALLEN) lived after they were married.

The Treetonweb site is well worth browsing as it contains many interesting historical facts about the coal mining area Daniel and Ziller relocated to, presumably for Daniel to find work in the local coal mines.

Updates:
2017-10-12 The Treetonweb web site has been down for quite some time and is most likely 'dead'.

I browsed through the England and Wales Census 1881 entries for Little Gringley, Nottinghamshire. A surprising number of dwellings are recorded, certainly more than my recent visit suggested. I was primarily searching for ALLEN and found the following:

FHJ Ref: 014
Census: England and Wales Census 1881
Place: Little Gringley, Clarborough, Nottinghamshire

I wonder if it is safe to assume that Vincent ALLEN is a brother to John ALLEN?

The 1841 census has both John and Vincent in the same household of John and Elizabeth Allen at Little Gringley.

The England and Wales Census 1881 records an Elizabeth ALLEN at Little Gringley, Nottinghamshire. I feel sure this must be Ziller JACKLIN (née Ziller ALLEN 1858-1949). My father recalls he knew his grandmother as Ziller but just to add to the confusion, her marriage certificate records the name Zellaby.

I think I need to obtain a copy of Ziller's birth certificate in order to clarify both her name at birth and her place of birth.

Updates:
2007-08-31 I later discovered Elizabeth ALLEN 1861-Deceased was a younger sister of Ziller JACKLIN (née Ziller ALLEN 1858-1949). The England and Wales Census 1881 records Ziller (Zillah) now living with the George SMITHSON 1830-Deceased household at East Drayton, Nottinghamshire.

Daniel Jacklin 1862-1953

Published: April 26, 2005    Last modified: February 2, 2017

An online search for Daniel JACKLIN 1862-1953 (my paternal great grandfather) lead me to a redundant link; fortunately the cached pages were available. These pages are a transcription of the England and Wales Census 1891.

I feel sure I have retrieved this entry before, either way a new search provides this record:

I know Daniel JACKLIN 1862-1953 and Ziller JACKLIN (née Ziller ALLEN 1858-1949) lived at Aston-cum-Aughton before moving to the Darnall area of Sheffield, but now I have the actual address. Even more interesting is the record of Elizabeth ALLEN 1861-Deceased 9 (niece), I guess when I can find the time it will be of value to establish Elizabeth's parents.

This entry records both Ziller and Elizabeth having been born at Gringley, Lincolnshire; other records show Ziller having being born at Little Gringley, Nottinghamshire. This is somewhat confusing! The two villages are only a few miles apart and I seem to recall my father speaking of relatives living at Gringley-on-the-Hill and at nearby Everton.

As usual a great deal more research is required.

Little Gringley, Retford, Nottinghamshire

Leaving East Drayton we moved on to the nearby hamlet of Little Gringley, approximately 4 miles east of Retford, Nottinghamshire. Little Gringley is the birth place of my great grandmother Ziller JACKLIN (née Ziller ALLEN) 1858-1949.

Little Gringley consists of just a few cottages and farms and I doubt it has changed a great deal in over 150 years. There isn't a church in Little Gringley so we were left guessing where the locals would be buried since Little Gringley seemed to be equidistant as the crow flies between Grove and Clarborough.

Updates:
2007-08-06 I finally found the time to visit the Church of Saint Saviour, Retford, Nottinghamshire, take some photographs and explore the attached cemetery. Photographs are in the Gallery.

My grandfather was Mr Frank Bush who was born at Bush Cottage, Little Gringley on 3rd August 1877. His parents were Joseph and Sarah Bush (nee Woodhead). They are both buried in the churchyard at Clarborough Church. I have lots more information about the Bush family of Little Gringley if anyone is interested.

Keith, thanks for your comment. I was in the area this weekend so I paid a brief visit to St. Saviours. I took some photographs and inspected some of the headstones. Could not find any with the family names I’m looking for: ALLEN and LITTLEWOOD.

Ziller Jacklin (née Ziller Allen 1859-1949): Census: East Drayton

Published: April 5, 2005    Last modified: November 14, 2016

Searching the England and Wales Census 1881 I discovered Ziller JACKLIN (née Ziller ALLEN) 1858-1949, my paternal great grandmother, appears to have had an older sister Jane ALLEN 1853-, both were born at Little Gringley, Nottinghamshire.

I surmise Jane ALLEN 1853- married George SMITHSON 1830- of East Drayton, East Retford, Nottinghamshire since the 1881 British Census records Ziller ALLEN 1858-1949 living (as sister-in-law) at East Drayton in the household of George SMITHSON 1830-:

These records suggest Jane SMITHSON (née Jane ALLEN 1853-) had 2 children, either from a previous marriage or 'out of wedlock'. I will need to conduct further research.
