John Henry Allen 1872-Deceased: Baptism

Church of Saint Peter, East Drayton, Nottinghamshire

This post is once again as a result of the searches I was making regarding Zillah LITTLEWOOD (née Zillah FENTON abt. 1807-1862).

The England and Wales Census 1881 records Jane SMITHSON (née Jane ALLEN 1853-1892) the eldest of the Allen siblings married to George SMITHSON 1830-Deceased and living at East Drayton, Nottinghamshire.

Interestingly a John H ALLEN 1872-Deceased is recorded as a step son, born at Lambeth, Surrey (now more commonly shown as Lambeth, London), one of the few of my Nottinghamshire ALLEN line to be born outside of the north Nottinghamshire area.

Quite by chance I came across a baptism record giving a little more detail:

John Henry ALLEN 1872-Deceased was baptised at the Church of Saint Peter, East Drayton, Nottinghamshire on the 19th of June 1878. His mother is shown to be Jane ALLEN and the register notes record 'Born in London. Mother shown as now SMITHSON'.

My great grandmother Ziller JACKLIN (née Ziller ALLEN 1858-1949) is also recorded as living at East Drayton, in the SMITHSON household.

George SMITHSON and Jane ALLEN were married on the 17th May 1875 at the Church of Saint Peter, East Drayton. George is shown to be 44 years of age and Jane 24 years of age.

After several years and a great deal of research, I may have solved my 'Elizabeth Allen' conundrum.

Just to recap, Elizabeth ALLEN 1882-Deceased appears in the England and Wales Census 1891 as a niece to Daniel JACKLIN 1862-1953 and Zillah JACKLIN (née Ziller ALLEN 1858-1949). I have always been intrigued by this niece but even with much research I had never been able to establish her place in the family tree:

Recently, while researching Zillah LITTLEWOOD (Zillah FENTON abt. 1807-1862), I was using FreeReg and searching the Nottinghamshire registers for various spellings of the forename 'Zillah'. At some point I must have decided to search for 'Zillah Allen', my great grandmother. Luckily I happened to have checked the 'Family members', 'Witnesses' and 'Soundtex' boxes and this returned two results:

Name: Eliza ALLEN
Event: Baptism
Date: 04 Mar 1882
Place: Nottinghamshire, Clarborough
Church: St Saviour
Type: Parish Register

and

Name: Sarah ALLEN and Issac BUTROID
Event: Marriage
Date: 28 Oct 1884
Place: Nottinghamshire, Clarborough
Church: St Saviour
Type: Parish Register

I was already aware, thanks to KG, of Sarah ALLEN 1862-1943 and Issac BUTROID 1862-1943's marriage, (Zilla ALLEN was a witness to the marriage of her sister Sarah, hence its inclusion in these results), but I was very surprised, when on expanding these search results, I saw that Eliza ALLEN's mother was Zilla ALLEN and Eliza's place of birth, Little Gringley. The record gives Eliza's date of birth as 14th February 1882.

So it transpires prior to Zilla ALLEN's marriage to Daniel JACKLIN and the birth of their son and my grandfather Wilfred JACKLIN 1896-1967, Ziller ALLEN had two daughters by fathers' unknown:

Georgiana ALLEN 1878-1965
Eliza ALLEN 1882-Deceased

In order to confirm this baptism record I can now try to obtain a birth certificate for Eliza ALLEN.

For quite some time I had not used FreeReg, since areas of the country I am interested in were not well covered. So I was very pleased to find that FreeReg is a very useful tool when searching the Nottinghamshire registers.

Issac BUTROID is also known as Jesse BUTROID

Frederick and Mary Law: Another discovery

Today I decided to spend a few hours researching some of the more obscure ancestors of my Ashforth line.

Frederick LAW 1811-Deceased was my ggg grandfather about whom I know very little. His wife I have recorded as Mary LAW, though I have yet to carry out any serious research into her maiden name.

While trawling through Parish Registers I came across some additional children, in fact one is the twin brother of Harriet LAW 1836-1903, my gg grandmother. I had already established a date of birth and baptism for Harriet LAW 1836-1903 and included in my notes is a flag to show she had a twin brother or sister. Past research for a twin has drawn a blank, consequently I half expected the twin died shortly after birth since I could find no record of birth or baptism. Until today that is.

I'm not sure if this is the result of more data being available or the fact that in the past I have failed to search for 'Harriett' as well as 'Harriet'. Whatever, I came across a baptism for one Frederick LAW born 15th of October 1836 and baptised at the Church of Saint Peter and Saint Paul, Sheffield (Sheffield Cathedral), on the 30th of October 1836.

An added bonus was the discovery of two more children, Mary Ann LAW and Ellen LAW. Mary Ann LAW was born on the 20th January 1829 and baptised on the 8th February 1829. Ellen LAW was born on the 5th of February 1831 and baptised on the 17th of April 1831. Both daughters were baptised at the Church of Saint Peter and Saint Paul, Church Street, Sheffield.

In order to establish the maiden name of Mary LAW, I will place an order to Sheffield Register Office for the birth certificate of George LAW 1838-Deceased, since he is the only child I have a record of that was born post July 1837, i.e. when registration began.

In my notes I have an England and Wales Census 1841 record:

FHJ Ref: 039
Census: England and Wales Census 1841
Place: Roscoe Field, Sheffield, Yorkshire
Household: Frederick Law

Interestingly there is no record of Frederick LAW, Ellen LAW or Mary Ann LAW. I am of course assuming this is the correct household, though despite the vagaries of the England and Wales Census 1841, the ages do seem to be correct.

Rosa Ashforth 1874: Birth Certificate

Published: November 3, 2007    Last modified: October 14, 2017

Certificates

At long last I seem to have found a maiden surname for the spouse of William Henry ASHFORTH 1851-1899. I have received from Sheffield Register Office the birth certificate for Rosa ASHFORTH 1874-Deceased.

Rosa ASHFORTH 1874-Deceased was born on the 23rd of February, 1874 at 83 Duncombe Street, Nether Hallam, Sheffield, Yorkshire, England. Her father is William Henry ASHFORTH 1851-1899 and her mother Ellen TOMLINSON 1855-1943.

My notes show I have a baptism record for Rosa ASHFORTH 1874-Deceased:

Ashforth, Rosie (adult) (of 172 Cuthbert Bank Rd).
Baptised December 5, 1888, by AH Rhodes at St John the Baptist Church, Owlerton.
Parents name(s) are Helena; William (File-cutter).

Rosa ASHFORTH 1874-Deceased is recorded as an adult. It would appear both William Henry ASHFORTH 1873-1926 and Rosa ASHFORTH 1874-Deceased were born before their parents were married.

This probably explains why Rosa was nearly 15 years of age when she was baptised.

My notes show a marriage in 1876 for William Henry ASHFORTH 1851-1899 and Ellen TOMLINSON 1855-1943. I will submit a request to Sheffield Register Office for this marriage certificate.

2007-11-25 I have transcribed the birth certificate of Rosa ASHFORTH 1874-Deceased. To view her birth certificate please click here.

Alice Ward (née Alice Ashforth 1891-Deceased)

Alice Ward (née Alice Ashforth 1891-Deceased)

Finally after many months of 'going to' I actually did take some of the family photographs (mainly from the ASHFORTH line) back to my mother for identification. Over the next few weeks I will scan the originals and add them to my gallery.

My mother identified this photograph of my great grand aunt Alice WARD (née Alice ASHFORTH 1891-Deceased), daughter of William Henry ASHFORTH 1851-1899 and Ellen ASHFORTH (née Ellen TOMLINSON 1855-1943).

My records show Alice WARD (née Alice ASHFORTH 1891-Deceased) was born in the year 1891 at Cuthbert Bank Road, Sheffield, Yorkshire. She was baptised on the 7th of October, 1891, by D. Hughes at the Church of Saint John the Baptist, Owlerton, Sheffield. Her parents are named as Ellen and William. William's profession being that of a 'File Cutter'.

Updates:
2007-11-03 Further research shows that Ellen ASHFORTH's maiden name was in fact TOMLINSON not PASLEY. To read this update please click here.

Alice Turner 1862-Deceased: Birth Certificate

Published: April 22, 2007    Last modified: May 22, 2022

Previous research revealed my 2nd great grand aunt, Alice TURNER 1862-Deceased, the daughter of Mary Ann TURNER (née Mary Ann JENNINGS 1828-Deceased) and Edwin TURNER 1827-Deceased residing at King Street, Nether Hallam, Sheffield, Yorkshire was baptised on September 10, 1864, by John Livesey at the Church of Saint Philip, Shalesmoor, Sheffield.

I expected her date of birth to be about June, 1863 but her birth certificate records the date as 13th August, 1862 at 99 King Street, Nether Hallam, Sheffield, Yorkshire.

The primary reason for obtaining this birth certificate was to help to establish my 3rd great grandmother, Mary Ann TURNER's maiden name; this is recorded as Mary Ann TURNER (née Mary Ann JENNINGS 1828-Deceased). This information provides the key to another branch of the family and hopefully some online research may provide a few clues.

A previous attempt by Sheffield Register Office to locate a birth certificate for my 2nd great grandmother, Mary Ann BELLAMY (née Mary Ann TURNER 1861-Deceased) was unproductive, so I am hoping this additional information may be of help in obtaining this certificate.

As soon as time allows I will post a full transcript of Alice TURNER 1862-Deceased's birth certificate and update my GEDCOM.
