Ziller Jacklin (née Ziller Allen 1858-1949)

Mother of Eliza Allen 1882-Deceased"][/caption]

After several years and a great deal of research, I may have solved my 'Elizabeth Allen' conundrum.

Just to recap, Elizabeth ALLEN 1882-Deceased appears in the England and Wales Census 1891 as a niece to Daniel JACKLIN 1862-1953 and Zillah JACKLIN (née Ziller ALLEN 1858-1949). I have always been intrigued by this niece but even with much research I had never been able to establish her place in the family tree:

Recently, while researching Zillah LITTLEWOOD (Zillah FENTON abt. 1807-1862), I was using FreeReg and searching the Nottinghamshire registers for various spellings of the forename 'Zillah'. At some point I must have decided to search for 'Zillah Allen', my great grandmother. Luckily I happened to have checked the 'Family members', 'Witnesses' and 'Soundtex' boxes and this returned two results:

Name: Eliza ALLEN
Event: Baptism
Date: 04 Mar 1882
Place: Nottinghamshire, Clarborough
Church: St Saviour
Type: Parish Register

and

Name: Sarah ALLEN and Issac BUTROID
Event: Marriage
Date: 28 Oct 1884
Place: Nottinghamshire, Clarborough
Church: St Saviour
Type: Parish Register

I was already aware, thanks to KG, of Sarah ALLEN 1862-1943 and Issac BUTROID 1862-1943's marriage, (Zilla ALLEN was a witness to the marriage of her sister Sarah, hence its inclusion in these results), but I was very surprised, when on expanding these search results, I saw that Eliza ALLEN's mother was Zilla ALLEN and Eliza's place of birth, Little Gringley. The record gives Eliza's date of birth as 14th February 1882.

So it transpires prior to Zilla ALLEN's marriage to Daniel JACKLIN and the birth of their son and my grandfather Wilfred JACKLIN 1896-1967, Ziller ALLEN had two daughters by fathers' unknown:

Georgiana ALLEN 1878-1965
Eliza ALLEN 1882-Deceased

In order to confirm this baptism record I can now try to obtain a birth certificate for Eliza ALLEN.

For quite some time I had not used FreeReg, since areas of the country I am interested in were not well covered. So I was very pleased to find that FreeReg is a very useful tool when searching the Nottinghamshire registers.

Issac BUTROID is also known as Jesse BUTROID

Aston-cum-Aughton and Treeton: Coal Miners

Published: April 21, 2008    Last modified: May 22, 2022

The England and Wales Census 1891 records 3 of the Allen sisters:

Sarah BUTROID (née Sarah ALLEN 1862-1943)
Hannah CUTTS (née Hannah ALLEN 1856-Deceased)
Ziller JACKLIN (née Ziller ALLEN 1858-1949) my great grandmother,

All originally from Little Gringley, Nottinghamshire and all now married and living at Aston-cum-Aughton and nearby Treeton. Their respective husbands are all recorded as coal miners.

I am intrigued as to how the sisters found their way to this area. I conjecture Daniel JACKLIN 1862-1953 and Ziller JACKLIN (née Ziller ALLEN 1858-1949) were forced to escape the poverty of living off the land at Little Gringley and seek a slightly more prosperous existence in the employment of the mine owners of the South Yorkshire coalfield. Likewise did the other sisters follow? Did they meet their husbands through the mining community or were they already married?

Daniel had left his home county of Cambridgeshire, presumably to seek work as a navvy on the railways or canals, both of which pass through Retford, Nottinghamshire and very close to Little Gringley.

I really need to study the relevant census information together with marriage certificates and maybe I can better ascertain when they made the transition from agricultural labourer to coal miner.

William Butroid and Rebecca Butroid (née Rebecca Bowering): Church of All Saints, Misterton, Nottinghamshire

Church of All Saints, Misterton, Nottinghamshire

After walking part of the Chesterfield Canal from West Stockwith towards Gringley-on-the-Hill we decided to return by way of the north Nottinghamshire village of Misterton. This gave me the opportunity to take some photographs of the Church of All Saints, Misterton and check the headstones for family names. This graveyard is immaculately kept and congratulations must go to the person or persons responsible.

William Butroid d.1886
Rebecca Butroid d.1895

By sheer chance the first headstone I checked (shown in the photograph above) was that of one William BUTROID and his wife Rebecca BUTROID (née Rebecca BOWERING).

My great grandmother Ziller JACKLIN (née Ziller ALLEN 1858-1949) had a sister Sarah BUTROID (née Sarah ALLEN 1862-1943) who married Jesse BUTROID 1862-1943. Jesse was born at West Butterwick and Jesse's father John BUTROID 1840-1921, was born at East Stockwith, just across the River Trent from West Stockwith and Misterton.

At this moment in time I am not sure where William and Rebecca BUTROID fit into the family tree, but as far as I am aware this is the only connection the JACKLIN line has with Misterton.

Unusually in these times of theft and vandalism the church was open and I was able to take a few photographs of the interior together with a couple of the stained glass windows. As usual the exterior proved more of a problem, strong sunlight prohibited some angles and 'street furniture' proved invasive on others.

Jesse Butroid 1862-1943 and Sarah Allen 1862-1943: Family tree updated

Published: November 1, 2005    Last modified: February 17, 2017

I finally made time to update the family tree of my great grand aunt Sarah ALLEN 1862-1943 sister of my great grandmother Ziller JACKLIN (née Ziller ALLEN 1858-1949) and both born at Little Gringley, Nottinghamshire. I am indebted to a direct descendant (actually my 3rd cousin 1 time removed) of Sarah BUTROID (née Sarah ALLEN 1862-1943) and Jesse BUTROID 1862-1943 for providing me with the details of their marriage. I wrote about this in an earlier article. I have updated my GEDCOM to reflect the new details.

This update adds the following descendants: Fanny MARSH 1891-1972, Elsie BUTROYD 1914-1985 and George Leslie GRANTHAM 1911-1955. Other descendants are still alive.

Dixon, Butroid and Seaton: Fillingham, Lincolnshire

While searching the surname DIXON online (my paternal grandmother's maiden name), I came across one Sarah DIXON. A reference to the village of Fillingham, Lincolnshire caught my eye.

As a very young child I remember staying for a few days at my uncle Harold's farm at Fillingham, and being from inner city Sheffield, farm animals, tractors and haystacks were an adventure playground.

I'm sure my uncle Harold was Harold CARTER 1913-1977, though I really know so little about this branch (paternal) of the family.

Anyway, while browsing the links on this site I then came across a reference to John BUTROID 1840-1921 and this lead to SEATON and BUTROID and eventually BUTROID.

Now the reason I mention this is because in previous posts I documented the link between my great grandmother Ziller ALLEN 1858-1949's sister Sarah ALLEN 1862-1943 and https://familyhistoryjournal.com/genealogy/getperson.php?personID=I56&tree=tree1.

Time and research will tell if the name Sarah DIXON is of any significance.

The 'Ancestors of John Heaton Gray' website has not been updated for a few years but maybe the email address is still valid.

2007-01-21 Unfortunately most of the external links appear to be broken.

2011-12-27 The links pointed at a website hosted by Geocities. This service has now closed so I have removed the links but retained the names.

John Butroid and Martha Seaton

Using the information provided by the descendant of Jesse BUTROID 1862-1943 and Sarah BUTROID (née Sarah ALLEN 1862-1943) I have added John BUTROID 1840-1921 and Martha BUTROID (née Martha SEATON 1843-1886), the parents of Jesse BUTROID 1862-1943 to my GEDCOM.

Jesse BUTROID 1862-1943 married Sarah BUTROID (née Sarah ALLEN 1862-1943), the sister of my great grandmother Ziller JACKLIN (née Ziller ALLEN 1858-1949).

Jesse Butroid and Sarah Butroid (née Sarah Allen): Marriage details

Published: June 10, 2005    Last modified: February 17, 2017

I wrote in this post about being contacted by a direct descendant of Jesse BUTROID 1862-1943 and Sarah BUTROID (née Sarah ALLEN 1862-1943). He has very kindly provided me with more details which has enabled me to corroborate some entries in my family history.

Jesse BUTROID 1862-1943 and Sarah BUTROID (née Sarah ALLEN 1862-1943)'s marriage certificate shows they were married on the 20th of October 1884 at the Church of Saint Saviour, Clarborough, Nottinghamshire, England. My great grandmother Ziller JACKLIN (née Ziller ALLEN 1858-1949) and Edward PALMER were witnesses. Jesse BUTROID 1862-1943's father is shown as John BUTROID 1840-1921: Sarah BUTROID (née Sarah ALLEN 1862-1943)'s father is shown as John ALLEN 1831-Deceased (my great great grandfather).

I have updated some of the details for Jesse BUTROID 1862-1943, Sarah BUTROID (née Sarah ALLEN 1862-1943), Ziller JACKLIN (née Ziller ALLEN 1858-1949) and John ALLEN 1831-Deceased in my GEDCOM.

Jesse Butroid and Sarah Allen

Published: June 1, 2005    Last modified: February 17, 2017

A few weeks ago I made this link between Sarah ALLEN and Jesse BUTROID. Browsing the England and Wales Census 1891 I found them living close to Daniel JACKLIN and Ziller JACKLIN (née Ziller ALLEN), my great grandparents, at Aston-cum-Aughton. Searches for Jesse BUTROID and Jesse BUTROYD were inconclusive so I moved on to other research. What a pleasant surprise when a couple of days ago I was emailed by a descendant of Jesse BUTROID and Sarah BUTROID (née Sarah ALLEN). The descendant found my Family Tree page and some notes I had saved while searching for Jesse BUTROID. He very kindly provided some of the missing details. I am now able to confirm Sarah ALLEN did indeed marry Jesse BUTROID and can now update my GEDCOM and Family History pages. I have also been able to corroborate the dates of various events sorrounding the ALLEN and BUTROID families. Some days are much better than others and some days the world gets smaller!

Jesse Butroid

So far my research of Jesse BUTROID 1862-1943 has failed to discover a great deal of additional information.

I did find on Google, a cached family history page recording an earlier Jesse BUTROID born in 1802 at East Ferry, Lincolnshire, England. A reference is made to the fact that Jesse BUTROID also went by the name of Jesse BUTTERY, a surname I have come across on my research into BELLAMY. I have made a note of the details since it may prove useful for future research.

I also found a surname list which includes BUTROID on this family history site: http://uk.geocities.com/buckfamilyuk "Ancestors of John Heaton Gray" (Geocities closed in 2009). This is interesting because some of the BUTROIDs listed were born at Butterwick, Lincolnshire, England. It could well be that 'Jesse' is not his 'official' name.

Sarah Allen

While researching my previous 2 posts re: Zillah ALLEN, I came across this record (which as it turns out, I already have) from the England and Wales Census 1891. It records Daniel JACKLIN 1862-1953 and Ziller JACKLIN (née ALLEN) 1858-1949 living at Aston-cum-Aughton so I decided to browse through some of the other households in the same area with a hunch that other members of the family may have relocated to the same area in order to find work in the coal mines. I eventually found this entry:

FHJ Ref: 013
Census: England and Wales Census 1891
Place:
Household: Jesse Butroid

According to this entry Sarah BUTROID was born in Little Gringley, Nottinghamshire, England. Intuition told me that this could well be Sarah BUTROID (née Sarah ALLEN).

An online search eventually produced the result I had expected:

Marriages in the district of East Retford for the period Dec 1884: Jesse BUTROID married Sarah ALLEN.

The dates are what I would expect. My only concern now is that some of the children I have linked to John ALLEN 1831- of Little Gringley, Nottinghamshire, England are still based on conjecture.
