I spent an interesting couple of hours browsing old pictures in and around Sheffield at Picture Sheffield. Highly recommended viewing.
Vincent Allen and Millicent Allen (née Millicent Morley)

Vincent ALLEN married Mary Millicent MORLEY in 1854.
Jesse Butroid
So far my research of Jesse BUTROID 1862-1943 has failed to discover a great deal of additional information.
I did find on Google, a cached family history page recording an earlier Jesse BUTROID born in 1802 at East Ferry, Lincolnshire, England. A reference is made to the fact that Jesse BUTROID also went by the name of Jesse BUTTERY, a surname I have come across on my research into BELLAMY. I have made a note of the details since it may prove useful for future research.
I also found a surname list which includes BUTROID on this family history site: http://uk.geocities.com/buckfamilyuk "Ancestors of John Heaton Gray" (Geocities closed in 2009). This is interesting because some of the BUTROIDs listed were born at Butterwick, Lincolnshire, England. It could well be that 'Jesse' is not his 'official' name.
Sarah Allen
While researching my previous 2 posts re: Zillah ALLEN, I came across this record (which as it turns out, I already have) from the England and Wales Census 1891. It records Daniel JACKLIN 1862-1953 and Ziller JACKLIN (née ALLEN) 1858-1949 living at Aston-cum-Aughton so I decided to browse through some of the other households in the same area with a hunch that other members of the family may have relocated to the same area in order to find work in the coal mines. I eventually found this entry:
FHJ Ref: 013
Census: England and Wales Census 1891
Place:
Household: Jesse Butroid
SURNAME | FIRST NAME(S) | REL | STATUS | SEX | AGE | OCCUPATION | WHERE BORN | REMARKS |
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
Butroid | Jesse | Head | Married | Male | 29 | Coal Miner(Em'ee) | W Butterwick, Lincolnshire | |
Butroid | Sarah | Wife | Married | Female | 29 | Little Gringley, Nottinghamshire | ||
Butroid | John W | Son | Single | Male | 7 | Retford, Nottinghamshire | ||
Butroid | Richard | Son | Male | 5 | Owsten Ferry, Lincolnshire | |||
Butroid | Mary | Dau | Female | 3 | Owsten Ferry, Lincolnshire |

According to this entry Sarah BUTROID was born in Little Gringley, Nottinghamshire, England. Intuition told me that this could well be Sarah BUTROID (née Sarah ALLEN).
An online search eventually produced the result I had expected:
Marriages in the district of East Retford for the period Dec 1884: Jesse BUTROID married Sarah ALLEN.
The dates are what I would expect.My only concern now is that some of the children I have linked to John ALLEN 1831- of Little Gringley, Nottinghamshire, England are still based on conjecture.
Zillah Allen: Forum message: Update
I was a little quick off the mark with my previous post. The email address I replied to was indeed 'live' and I received a speedy reply. Unfortunately it became clear that we have two different families here, though I image if we go a little further back in time they will undoubtedly be closely linked.
Having checked the England and Wales Census 1891 there are indeed two Zillah ALLENs recorded in Nottinghamshire:
FHJ Ref: 012
Census: England and Wales Census 1891
Place: Carlton, Nottinghamshire, England
Household: Richard Allen
SURNAME | FIRST NAME(S) | REL | STATUS | SEX | AGE | OCCUPATION | WHERE BORN | REMARKS |

The census record above shows a Zillah ALLEN at Carlton, Nottinghamshire.
The other is my great grandmother Ziller JACKLIN (née ALLEN) 1858-1949, who at this time was still single and living with her sister-in-law at East Drayton, Nottinghamshire, England.
Zillah Allen: Forum message
I found this message on the 'Allens - Nottinghamshire' forum at Genealogy.com
Looking for descendants of John Allen and Emily Whitbread. They had been living in Carlton, Nottinghamshire in 1915+. One of their daughters was named Zillah, after her grandmother on the paternal side.
This is almost certainly a reference to Ziller (Zillah) JACKLIN (née ALLEN). I have replied to the given email address, just hope it is still 'live'.
Hannah Cutts (née Hannah Allen)
An online search confirmed my intuition:
Marriages Dec 1872
ALLEN Hannah, Rotherham
COE William Henry, Rotherham
CUTTS Frederick Thomas, Rotherham
GOLLAND Fanny, Rotherham
So is Hannah CUTTS (née ALLEN) Ziller ALLEN's sister?
Updates:
2007-08-31 Though I still do not have any documentary evidence this Hannah CUTTS is undoubtedly Hannah ALLEN, an older sister of Ziller JACKLIN (née ALLEN).
Frederick Cutts and Hannah Cutts (neé Hannah Allen)
I found a reference to Little Gringley, Nottinghamshire, England on Treetonweb1891 Census. This page records an entry transcribed from the England and Wales Census 1891 for the CUTTS household in Treeton, Rotherham, Yorkshire, England and lists:
FHJ Ref: 011
Census: England and Wales Census 1891
Place: 19 Mill Lane, Treeton, Rotherham, Yorkshire, England
Household: Frederick Cutts
SURNAME | FIRST NAME(S) | REL | STATUS | SEX | AGE | OCCUPATION | WHERE BORN | REMARKS |
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
Cutts | Frederick | Head | Married | Male | 36 | Coal Miner | Morthen, Yorkshire | |
Cutts | Hannah | Wife | Married | Female | 37 | Little Gringley, Nottinghamshire | ||
Cutts | Eliza | Daughter | Female | 10 | Scholar | Treeton, Yorkshire | ||
Cutts | Lily | Daughter | Female | 3 | Treeton, Yorkshire |

Little Gringley being the birthplace of Hannah CUTTS (neé Hannah ALLEN) and with Little Gringley being a sparsely populated hamlet, this could well be a clue worth saving for research into the ALLEN family. The village of Treeton is only a few miles from Aston-cum-Aughton and Swallownest where Daniel JACKLIN and Ziller JACKLIN (née ALLEN) lived after they were married.
The Treetonweb site is well worth browsing as it contains many interesting historical facts about the coal mining area Daniel and Ziller relocated to, presumably for Daniel to find work in the local coal mines.
Updates:
2017-10-12 The Treetonweb web site has been down for quite some time and is most likely 'dead'.
Allen: Census: East Retford
I came across this entry in the RootsWeb ALLEN-UK-L Archives. It is a transcription from the England and Wales Census 1891, listing all the ALLEN entries for East Retford, Nottinghamshire, England.
