He has provided me with a great deal of information regarding the descendants of Harriet BARLOW (née Harriet ALLEN 1877-1958) together with permission to publish this photograph of Harriet taken about 1918. I have added the information to my GEDCOM which...

John Henry Allen 1872-Deceased: Baptism

Published: October 14, 2017    Last modified: February 21, 2024

...across a baptism record giving a little more detail: John Henry ALLEN 1872-Deceased was baptised at the Church of Saint Peter, East Drayton, Nottinghamshire on the 19th of June 1878. His mother is shown to be Jane ALLEN and the register notes record 'Born in London. Mother shown as now SMITHSON'. My great grandmother Ziller JACKLIN (née Ziller ALLEN 1858-1949) is also recorded as living at East Drayton, in the SMITHSON household. George SMITHSON and Jane ALLEN were married on the 17th May 1875 at the Church of Saint Peter, East Drayton. George is shown to be 44 years of...

Elizabeth Allen or Elizabeth Smithson?

Published: September 29, 2008    Last modified: October 18, 2017

...Ziller ALLEN 1858-1949) agreed to 'adopt' her. A quick search of the England and Wales Census 1901 reveals an Elizabeth SMITHSON aged 22 years living at East Drayton. Another search of FreeBMD this time for a marriage for Elizabeth SMITHSON reveals several, but the only one in an anticipated locality is registered in December 1909 at Rotherham, Yorkshire. The husbands name could either be Thomas DAVIS or Fred KEIGHLEY. At this time Daniel JACKLIN 1862-1953 and Ziller JACKLIN (née Ziller ALLEN 1858-1949) were probably still living at Swallownest so it could well be Elizabeth SMITHSON 1879-Deceased married at the Church...

Charles Henry Ward and Georgiana Ward (née Georgiana Allen): England and Wales Census 1901

Published: February 20, 2017    Last modified: February 22, 2017

If my previous post illustrating the vagaries of searching for ancestors proved none too difficult eventually, this next search seemed to take forever. With reference to this article regarding my great grandmother Ziller JACKLIN (née Ziller ALLEN 1858-1949) and her daughter Georgiana ALLEN 1879-1965, I was curious to know more about Georgiana's family. BW had provided me with a few clues: 1) Georgiana's husband was one Charles Henry WARD. 2) Georgiana was born at the Union Workhouse, Clarborough (East Retford, Nottinghamshire). 3) In 1896 they were married at the Church of All Saints, Aston-cum-Aughton, Rotherham. 4) Georgiana later used the...

An online search confirmed my intuition: Marriages Dec 1872 ALLEN Hannah, Rotherham COE William Henry, Rotherham CUTTS Frederick Thomas, Rotherham GOLLAND Fanny, Rotherham So is Hannah CUTTS (née ALLEN) Ziller ALLEN's sister? Updates: 2007-08-31 Though I still do not have any documentary evidence this Hannah CUTTS is undoubtedly Hannah ALLEN, an older sister of Ziller JACKLIN (née ALLEN)....

Jesse Butroid and Sarah Allen

Published: June 1, 2005    Last modified: February 17, 2017

A few weeks ago I made this link between Sarah ALLEN and Jesse BUTROID. Browsing the England and Wales Census 1891 I found them living close to Daniel JACKLIN and Ziller JACKLIN (née Ziller ALLEN), my great grandparents, at Aston-cum-Aughton. Searches for Jesse BUTROID and Jesse BUTROYD were inconclusive so I moved on to other research. What a pleasant surprise when a couple of days ago I was emailed by a descendant of Jesse BUTROID and Sarah BUTROID (née Sarah ALLEN). The descendant found my Family Tree page and some notes I had saved while searching for Jesse BUTROID. He...

Elizabeth Allen 1861-Deceased

Published: June 5, 2005    Last modified: November 11, 2016

Looking back though some of my old posts I realise this post regarding my great grandmother Ziller JACKLIN (née Ziller ALLEN) was a little precipitant. Probably due to the fact that I had taken a 2 year hiatus from family history research, I had forgotten the family is in possesion of a birth and a marriage certificate for Ziller ALLEN 1859-1949. Of course as soon as I got to see the certificates I realised Elizabeth ALLEN is probably a sibling. I now need to follow some of the leads in the notes I attached to her GEDCOM entry....

Jesse Butroid 1862-1943 and Sarah Allen 1862-1943: Family tree updated

Published: November 1, 2005    Last modified: February 17, 2017

I finally made time to update the family tree of my great grand aunt Sarah ALLEN 1862-1943 sister of my great grandmother Ziller JACKLIN (née Ziller ALLEN 1858-1949) and both born at Little Gringley, Nottinghamshire. I am indebted to a direct descendant (actually my 3rd cousin 1 time removed) of Sarah BUTROID (née Sarah ALLEN 1862-1943) and Jesse BUTROID 1862-1943 for providing me with the details of their marriage. I wrote about this in an earlier article. I have updated my GEDCOM to reflect the new details. This update adds the following descendants: Fanny MARSH 1891-1972, Elsie BUTROYD 1914-1985 and...

Aston-cum-Aughton and Treeton: Coal Miners

Published: April 21, 2008    Last modified: May 22, 2022

The England and Wales Census 1891 records 3 of the Allen sisters: Sarah BUTROID (née Sarah ALLEN 1862-1943) Hannah CUTTS (née Hannah ALLEN 1856-Deceased) Ziller JACKLIN (née Ziller ALLEN 1858-1949) my great grandmother, All originally from Little Gringley, Nottinghamshire and all now married and living at Aston-cum-Aughton and nearby Treeton. Their respective husbands are all recorded as coal miners. I am intrigued as to how the sisters found their way to this area. I conjecture Daniel JACKLIN 1862-1953 and Ziller JACKLIN (née Ziller ALLEN 1858-1949) were forced to escape the poverty of living off the land at Little Gringley and...
